Auto rebate effect on mid-January sales

Detroit AP reports that auto makers release mid-January sales figures reflecting the new rebate program with analysts predicting a substantial upturn but not ending the longest postwar auto slump. 3M pleads guilty to illegal political contributions charge

The 3M Co pleaded guilty to making illegal political contributions over ten years, distributing at least 635000 to campaigns from presidential races to city councils. Five counts of violating state election laws were charged, with a 5000 dollar fine. executives agreed to reimburse 475000. Irwin Hansen pleaded guilty to three counts and was fined 3000 dollars. The case covered 390 listed contributions from 1963 to 1972. state law limitations applied to contributions since January 22 1972.
