John Hall, a Bemidji dairy farmer with 110 Holsteins, says production costs now exceed receipts. He and others blame inflation, grain shortages, and federal pricing rules. Parity and federal milk orders keep Class I prices low while imports surge, undermining breakeven levels.
Detroit AP reports that auto makers release mid-January sales figures reflecting the new rebate program with analysts predicting a substantial upturn but not ending the longest postwar auto slump. The Jan 11-20 period is expected to total no more than 140000 cars versus 155004 a year earlier, the weakest mid-January in twelve years amid the energy crisis.
Dr. Jeremiah Stamler of Northwestern University reports a study showing heart attack death rates among white men have begun to decline after 30 years of rise. He suggests the hump may be passed and notes data from 1940 to present.
FBI Director Clarence M. Kelley says the agency cannot legally purge derogatory and unproven allegations against members of Congress without written approval from the national archivist James B. Rhoads. He gave no indication he would seek clearance.
Sen. Hubert Humphrey charged President Ford’s tax cut would mostly help the rich and warned of inflation from energy policy. He outlined a Democratic alternative including tax cuts now and 500,000 public service jobs, while rejecting the energy and rebate plans.
Treasury Secretary William E. Simon asked Congress for a 22 percent rise in the federal debt limit to 604 billion dollars through June 30, 1976, noting a temporary 495 billion cap expires March 31 and federal deficits mount as revenues fall. He warned the government would exceed the 495 billion limit on Feb. 8 and tied the move to the president's oil tariff and economic proposals.
Washington officials say there will be no serious fall in American Soviet commerce despite the collapse of a major trade accord. Ford argues potential growth beyond 900 million in 1974 seems unlikely as economists note limited expansion prospects amid existing long term contracts and ongoing demand for chrome platinum and diamonds.
Deputy County Auditor Tony Paxton details how the 1975 county levy of 1,458,758 is allocated. For non agricultural property taxes the county takes 32 cents, welfare 18, city of Bemidji 24, ISD 31 44, with HRDC receiving about 0.5 cent. Welfare rises to 825,000 while total levy up 22 percent from 1974.
The 3M Co pleaded guilty to making illegal political contributions over ten years, distributing at least 635000 to campaigns from presidential races to city councils. Five counts of violating state election laws were charged, with a 5000 dollar fine. executives agreed to reimburse 475000. Irwin Hansen pleaded guilty to three counts and was fined 3000 dollars. The case covered 390 listed contributions from 1963 to 1972. state law limitations applied to contributions since January 22 1972.
