Bemidji City Council voted 4 to 3 against the firemen wage package featuring a 95 dollar monthly raise and clothing allowance plus off duty disability insurance. The liquor store employees’ 9.1 percent raise was also rejected after an accounting error showed a 14.8 percent overall increase for current staff.
The Labor Department reports 1974 inflation at 12.2 percent the highest peacetime rise since 1913. December prices rose 0.7 percent while food costs surged a quarter of the total increase. Energy prices and proposed Ford taxes threaten to lift this year's CPI.

Heavy fighting broke out 25 miles south of Da Nang around Que Son as South Vietnamese forces sought to solidify their defense line. The Saigon command said 141 North Vietnamese and Viet Cong were killed, with two South Vietnamese soldiers killed and 16 wounded.
