Michael J. Sullivan a Democrat and Arlan Stangeland a Republican easily won their parties in Minnesota's 7th District primary. Sullivan captured 78 percent in a four way Democratic race, Knutson faded, and Stangeland won 97 percent over Richard Franson. The winners face off February 22 for the congressional seat left by Bergland.
Area voters backed Mike Sullivan over Coya Knutson 1382 to 329 with Sullivan leading in Red Lake Bemidji Northern Township and several wards. Knutson carried smaller shares in the same precincts. Independent Republican Arlan Stangeland won decisively with 569 votes. Municipalities Funkley Minnie Steenerson voted Sullivan. results await canvassing to certify turnout from 15 671 registered voters as Clearwater Countyites showed high turnout.
Beltrami County Board voted to compensate John McMahan for Oct 15, 1976 to Jan 12, 1977 of service as probation officer. The four member panel approved the payment after discussion noting 1976 budget covered two officers and the deal required McMahan sign release to hold the county harmless.
Park Rapids School Board rejected a parent backed effort to bar sex education and related topics, citing no legal authority. The move followed a legal opinion and PREA statement opposing the prohibition. The board approved an ethnic cultural center and other county actions during the same meeting.
Washington AP reports the Labor Department first major study on career switching shows 32 percent of workers had changed careers since 1965 based on a 1970 census survey. The finding indicates nearly one in three Americans altered their job paths over the five year period.
Lebanon rejects Israel's demand to pull back Syrian troops from a town eight miles from the frontier but agrees to keep talking. An Israeli official in Jerusalem says Washington vindicates that Lebanon and Syria see a diplomatic solution as possible and that ongoing contacts are a positive sign.
An accord with the Russians may save the United States up to 30 billion dollars and neutralize a new Soviet weapon. The MX mobile long range missile is still in early development with most costs ahead and readiness in about seven years. Russia’s SSX-20 mobile missile has been tested for over two years and could be deployed soon.
President Carter’s nominee Clifford L. Alexander says he will prioritize manpower issues in the Army but sees no need to reinstate the draft. He acknowledges debate over involuntary service to fill widening reserve gaps.
