In Beirut the conflict over the city’s seaside hotels persists despite a new truce pledge from Muslim leftists and their rightwing Christian opponents. The fighting affects tourism and local stability as the factions press for control of key hotel properties along the coast.

A railroad tank car exploded at the Hooker plant in Niagara Falls New York releasing chlorine gas. Four people were killed and about eighty others, including passersby and store customers, were overcome by fumes as parts of the car flew 150 feet.
