White House Christmas tree ornament sparks debate over peace symbol
The national Christmas tree top near the White House will keep its atomic peace symbol, despite a newspaper call to replace it with a traditional star. GE designer John Suter explains the four interlocking rings symbolize world peoples and hopeful peace, with a 500 watt center bulb. The Park Service notes the tree has featured various shapes since 1964, and no plan to revert to a star. The 70-foot spruce in Ellipse Park lights total about 8,000 bulbs, plus 8,000 on state trees, as the pageant of peace continues through the season.
