Feasibility, profit seen in longer lakes season
Detroit AP report notes extending the St. Lawrence Seaway and Great Lakes shipping season is financially and technologically feasible. Economist Dr. Eric Schenker projects a four week extension costing 120 million annually for 25 years, with potential 240 million yearly regional economic impact and heavy federal involvement. Technologists Col Myron Snoke describes air bubblers, glide wires, ice booms and radar guided lanes as methods to keep lanes open year round, though costs remain prohibitive.
