The Labor Department reports U.S. unemployment at 6.5 percent in November, up 482000 to 5,975,000, with total employment falling nearly 800000 to 85.7 million. Auto, electrical, textile, and retail layoffs drive the downturn as lawmakers consider emergency jobless benefits and policy shifts.
