Day hospital care favored over full hospitalization for acutely ill mental patients
A two year study funded by the National Institute of Mental Health at the New York State Psychiatric Institute compared day hospital care with full inpatient treatment. Of 424 patients, 90 were assigned to day care or inpatient care. Day care yielded faster community discharge and fewer readmissions, suggesting day hospital treatment as a feasible alternative within public mental health reform efforts.
