January saw 4705 total claims as last winter’s high. Analysts warn the cyclical job market will worsen again this winter though many who peaked previously become ineligible for benefits under the 65 week maximum.
November 1975 claims nearly double those on November 1, 1974 due to a sharp rise in new claims and continuing low job placement, based on figures from the Minnesota Department of Employment Services.
In Bemidji Minnesota the unemployment office processes 40 people daily amid 2013 claims statewide rising. Region 2 faces 157 residents without income as extended benefits and federal aid wane. Title X and CETA funds offer work but must be distributed regionally with winter constraints.
Bemidji City Council tabled the second reading of an Ottertail Power Company franchise ordinance proposing a two percent fee for electrical users. The vote to delay pending full council review followed concerns from businesses about higher bills and included a two week notice proposal.
The Bemidji downtown Christmas promotion runs through Christmas with many stores open Sundays 12 to 4 p.m. and evenings 9 p.m. weekdays December 12 to 23. Santa visits December 13 at the lakefront and armory, followed by a free Chief Theater movie and daytime street appearances.
Drivers may alter assigned gross weights and registration fees for 1976 trucks. The Motor Vehicle Division says weights were sometimes set too high, especially for pickup trucks. Registrations renew by Jan 10 with a $2.50 late fee after the 11th. Weather mixed with chances of light snow and flurries, highs 10 to 25.
A 21-year-old Grand Rapids man, Gordon Johnson, was captured south of Walker after eluding about two dozen officers through more than 100 miles of icy roads Monday night. He sustained minor bruises while attempting to run a fourth roadblock, Cass County sheriff Lewis Chalich said.
City negotiator Larry Dow announced at a regular council meeting that state mediator Ken Palmer will return to mediate the Bemidji police contract talks. The city and the Bemidji Federation of Police Officers disagree on at least two issues including wages, with the latest police offer deemed unacceptable. A date for the next mediation has not been set.
