Former U S attorney George Beall asks for public disclosure of transcripts from two secret meetings held October 8 and 9 1973 that led to Spiro Agnew's resignation. He said prosecutors and judge Walter E Hoffman participated and Agnews lawyers have yet to respond.
Premier Ian Smith warned he would end constitutional talks unless African leaders accept further talks inside Rhodesia. An ACC delegation insisted on meetings outside Rhodesia to avoid arrest threats against militant leaders labeled terrorists.
Secretary of State Henry Kissinger headed for Egypt with a draft interim Sinai accord believed near final. Israeli officials hailed progress as Kissinger left for Alexandria and warneds subtle points were being worked out. An initialing ceremony could occur before week’s end with withdrawal lines settled and several frontline surveillance posts to be set up and partly manned by American technicians.
The four postal unions ratified a labor deal giving members 1500 in raises over three years and now press for legislation to permit a nationwide strike. James Rademacher of the National Association of Letter Carriers says the goal is legal strike authority while the pact’s path is secured.
Portugal's 28 member Revolutionary Council met in emergency session but could not resolve the dispute over pro Communist Premier Vasco Goncalves. A power outage disrupted much of the country for about 60 minutes as violence broke out in Leiria at the Communist party HQ. The council, with nine moderates led by Ernesto Melo Antunes, did not mention Goncalves in a brief postmeeting statement.
In Leiria near Lisbon violence erupts after a pro Goncalves commander is restored to power. Soldiers cordon the Communist party building as mobs throw rocks and a man dies. another suspected dead is reported. In Porto a crowd attacks an NBC crew, injuring a camera operator.
A two year old bear in the Nymore area stayed in a tree at 722 3rd St for about an hour before Byron Durland, a conservation officer, shot the animal as people including children gathered nearby. Durland said a tranquilizer gun was on the way but unavailable in time. Wildlife officials cited gun shortages and cost as ongoing issues.
Fred McDougall, 32, new executive director of Minnesota Indian Affairs Board, splits work weeks between St Paul and Bemidji to balance urban and reservation needs. He seeks to keep the St Paul office, relaunches the board after legislative moves to move or dissolve the body, and touts rising Indian self determination and reforms in justice education and economic development.
Larry L. Young 30 former geography teacher at BSU is hired as Bemidji city community development planner. He begins duties advising the planning commission and housing authority and serving as chief grantsman. Salary 10000 funded through June 1976 by CETA. He aims for orderly growth preserving northern area uniqueness while coordinating broad public involvement. He and wife Sue and children Lisa and Andy live at Pine Tree Estates.
Governor Wendell Anderson heads a 13 member Minnesota delegation to China in a two week visit aimed at opening trade relations. The trip includes business executives doctors a farmer and a columnist with no state funds used and individuals paying their own way. The group will visit Beijing Shanghai Harbin and Manchuria returning by September 9.
