Fifty youths from the Youth Conservation Corps wrapped up the Bald Eagle Center session with a farewell banquet. John Osborne, camp director, praised the self planned event while noting staff may be called away for western fire duties.
Bemidji State College supplied seven camp counselors and guest lecturers for YCC activities at the center. A blue ribbon committee including Dr Wally Wanek and Forest Supervisor M K Lauritsen set objectives: learn about natural resources, gain employable outdoor skills, conserve resources, build self-discipline, and bridge diverse youths. The program drew hundreds of applications yearly and met its goals of sound mind in a sound body.
For 11 years Bemidji has run a recreation center with a Friday roller skating night at the National Guard Armory. Eddie Michalko of Black Duck is the concessionaire, with assistants James George and Jim Smith serving as informal babysitters. The program runs 6:30 to 10:30 p.m., and staff watch children while parents skate, sometimes teaching them to glide. A 10-year-old first-timer received patient help and enjoyed skating, and many families participate.
