An overnight lightning storm in Idaho and Montana may have started as many as 300 new fires. Boise center reports six major fires in four states burned about 40,000 acres while 13 major fires across 100,000 acres were battled by 12,000 firefighters. Weather officials warned of more thunderstorms through Saturday.
Chippewa National Forest officials report that 47 local men flown to Montana and California to fight fires remain at their initial postings. Some crews were rumored moved between Montana and California but cannot be confirmed. The first group of 23 left Aug 15 for Boise Idaho and the Caribou fire in Northwest Montana. The second group of 24 left Aug 19 for the Granite fire near San Francisco.
Attorneys for the Bemidji Police Officers Federation filed to stop the city and the Bemidji Police Civil Service Commission from appointing a police chief until a court case resolves. A Sept. 5 hearing in Beltrami County Courthouse will seek a temporary injunction and the dissolution of the de facto commission. The suit targets the commission members Kaiser LaVoy and Hind and demands an appointment honoring seniority within the Bemidji police department.

Washington AP Henry A. Kissinger named to replace William P. Rogers in a Cabinet shift signaling push for warmer ties with China and the Soviet Union. Rogers, 60, returns to New York law practice saying he was the last of Nixon’s initial Cabinet. Kissinger would be the first Jewish and foreign-born secretary of state if Senate confirms.
