Market for Turkeys Told by Bedford Produce Manager
J W Harvey of Bedford Produce Co explains turkey breeding and marketing ahead of the holidays. He urges careful stock selection, feeding, and timing, noting eastern prices for prime birds and losses from indiscriminate buying. He cites Thanksgiving and Christmas as peak periods and warns against selling undersized birds.
Selecting Turkeys by Market Season for Thanksgiving and Christmas
The turkey raiser should pick his largest fat test toms for Thanksgiving sales and keep hens and small thin toms for Christmas. Heavy toms are less valued at Christmas and toms fetch higher prices at Thanksgiving. Turkeys should be pre arranged with buyers, sold two weeks before each holiday to optimize price and stock intake.
