Large Apple Shipment Reaches Local Wharf From Harrison County
A major apple delivery to the city arrived on the wharf yesterday morning totaling nearly 7 000 barrels. The J W Thomas Alma and Bedford steamers carried 2 700 barrels and Bellevue with three barges added 3 700 barrels from down river consignments to local commission merchants. Most apples came from Harrison County Indiana amid a golden harvest. Afternoon activity showed workers hauling fruit away while the Courier Journal notes the transfer. In bedford a new bank foundation unearthed oak posts 18 inches in diameter. Uncovered posts showed ax marks and dates to about 1882. Uncle Jep Knight recalls a livery stable built there by Dr Edward Moberly and later moved by Matthew Porland to another site nearby. Knight, age 86, places the discovery in Bedford’s early era seven years after county seat moved from Palestine.
