Oddities In Railroad Laws In Several States
A review of various state railroad statutes reveals diverse rules. Montana requires stations at towns of 100 or more. twenty states have rail commissions with rate powers in some cases. California treats intoxication on duty as a misdemeanor, with death as a possible felony if it causes a death. Wrecking a train can be a felony in California with potential death or life imprisonment as penalties. Oklahoma mandates line and station near county seats within three miles. South Carolina allows segregation penalties for trolley conductors. California limits carload transport of cattle and swine to avoid long rest breaks. Virginia statutes equate railroad and railway as synonyms for legal purposes. Massachusetts punishes illegal street railway transfer sales with fines or brief imprisonment. Washington recently set a maximum adult railroad fare.
