Belt Line Road project eyed by Walsh aims at Terre Haute
The Southern Indiana railroad controlled by Chicago capitalist John R. Walsh announces a belt line around Terre Haute with early work expected. The plan is seen as a step toward a Chicago through route to connect Walsh’s Bedford stone quarries, threatening rivals Chicago and Eastern Illinois and Chicago and Indiana Coal Road. Football crowds boosted rail business as 17 to Salem, 18 to Bloomington, and 31 for a special train to Lafayette for Indiana University versus Purdue.
