The death of Johnny Bennett, a Menon brakeman, is described as a heroic act to avert a railroad disaster. Delayed freight had to pass a switch, Bennett ran ahead to flag No 4, was struck near a curve by the engine, and died as the train stopped. He belonged to the Brotherhood of Railroad Trainmen, Lodge 402, Lafayette.

The next encampment will be in Kokomo after a spirited contest. Also noted are concurrent Woman's Relief Corps and Ladies of the G A R meetings and local notes on coal logistics and a social item about Miss Cora Dove's engagement to Will C Cook.
Melvin Pate aged 18, son of Mr and Mrs Scott Pate of Leesville, left home Tuesday morning claiming a Bedford day trip. He rode with a stranger after starting on foot and has not returned. He is 5 feet 7 inches, about 150 pounds, light complected. Parents offer Reward for information.
Public schools closed for summer vacation with commencement in the High School assembly. Graduates listed include Arthur Benzel, Lawrence Burke, Daphna Lurita Bratton, C. Dodd Bailey, Gladys Blackburn, and many others. The program featured music, readings, and diplomas presented by Prof. J. B. Fagan.
In the Grand Gold Medal Oratorical Contest at Campbellsburg Mrs W G Batt of this city spoke and won the medal. She will stay a few days to visit relatives.
P M Russell left his unhitched buggy horse in front of a dwelling on political Thursday. The horse nibbled grass, flipped the buggy into a ditch, then bolted, breaking the buggy top with no further damage reported.
Oscar Morris travels to Bloomington to press charges against the Ellettsville saloon operator accused of operating a blind tiger and of whipping Morris after buying whisky. Meanwhile Mitchell plans a skating rink modeled after Bedford, with Bedford capital backing the project as local businessmen tour Mitchell for the venture.
A Mitchell woman locked up for the day and left a door note saying All out Don't leave any thing. On returning she found the house ransacked and valuables taken. A thief added Thanks, we haven't left much to the door.
Mrs. Minerva Clampitt of Heltonville and her sister Mrs. Matilda Utter, both in their 70s, visited Friday morning at the Clampitt home with grandson Frank Clampitt on East 18th Street. They were raised nearby and became widows around the same time.
Monro e county temperance forces report a remonstrance against a saloon license renewal in Stinesville with sufficient signatures to prevent the August renewal. Saloons have already been driven from Harrodsburg Ellettsville and Bloomington, leaving two big businesses in Stinesville drawing trade from the college town.
A woman telephoned police about a buggy with a girl screaming inside driven by a man toward Leatherwood bridge. Officers pursued, reached the bridge but found the buggy gone. the pursuing officers later encountered the pair returning, both intoxicated.
Last Sunday afternoon visitors toured Postmaster Hamlin Smith's Angora goat farm east of town. Dr. Smith owns hundreds of acres, raising thirty nine goats on underbrush, with no winter feeding. They yielded an average three pounds of wool per head, sold to eastern markets at four to five dollars per pound for top quality Angora wool.
Civil service exams announced for Indianapolis next month cover aid by the National Museum division, local and assistant inspector hulls in marine service, surveyor of mineral deposits, and weather observer with salaries ranging from 50 to 1 400 dollars yearly. Additional notes mention a mechanician post with no educational test and details for applications from H. K. Milhouse.
R C Strange, a Bedford area native and brother of Mrs J R Black, died suddenly in North Carolina. The Order of Locomotive Engineers helped prompt an investigation and the arrest of a man connected to the case. Authorities believe poisoning caused Strange's death.
Bedford defeats Bloomington High School 7 to 6 at Washington Park in a rainless Saturday game. Bedford bats early for four runs in the first inning while Bloomington posts six in the first half of the seventh. Bedford rallies in the ninth, eight runs, to seal the victory before about 200 spectators. Umpire Campbell presided. Players included Bedford Mitchell Fagan Owens Speer Johnston McCormick Noke McElhaney Trainor and Bloomington Alexander Van Vaugh Wood land Johnston Rogers Rohrer Botts Johns and Green.
The Heitger Carbureter Company of Indianapolis is incorporated with 10000 capital. Directors include J A Heitger W E Clark W N Urmey J M Heitger and G H Heitger. Frank Heitger is noted as the inventor of the carbureter. Meanwhile Melvin Pate’s parents learn he is safe though missing, believed to have traveled from Leesville to Mitchell and then possibly took a B and O S W flyer toward Kansas, with an uncle sheltering him.
The Tap day ceremony at Yale marked three senior secret society initiations on campus. Skull and Bones inducted J. C. Thornton of Bedford Indiana and James Thornton, son of E. B. Thornton, amid high exam grades and popularity. Louis Bowles, visiting Bloomington, narrowly escaped a serious foot injury on a Monon train near New Haven after stepping between car platforms.
A construction train on the Indianapolis Southern Railroad crashed through a 25 foot high temporary trestle one mile west of Linton at 9 AM Thursday. Frank Lackmore was fatally injured and several laborers were injured. The locomotive and seven cars sank through the light timber structure. injured were taken to Linton.
Workmen on the George Mc Ginnis property at 14th street between Land J streets excavated a large petrified club about eleven feet deep. The club is roughly three and a half feet long and four inches wide at the center, tapering toward the ends, with the small end like a bat handle. Its origin remains uncertain, though it resembles clubs used in Indian warfare.
Engineer James M. Allen of Seymour was badly hurt on the Bedford branch of the B and O when he jumped from a cab window into a rock-cut. His right ankle was twisted and ligaments torn. doctors say he likely cannot work until late next month or later. The wound was swollen on arrival in Seymour and could not be cast for days.
