The American steamer Nebraskan was not flying the American flag when she was torpedoed after dusk. The ship’s name appeared in large letters on both sides, but there was no warning and Captain Green reported no other signs of danger.
Joe Roberts of East 19th street was injured Thursday around 1 PM while moving heavy stone at the Thornton Stone Mill. A chain failure caused a rock to strike his knee and right foot, tearing and bruising the leg. A local doctor found no broken bones and he rests at home.
Mrs. Frank Ketchum hosted a refined dinner at her South I Street home on Wednesday for Mr. Opal Gyger and Miss Ethel Kinser whose engagement will lead to a June wedding. Eight guests shared ice cream strawberries and cake as a shower of gifts arrived for the bride to be.
A popular young couple in the city are planning marriage. the bride lives on North N Street and the groom, a draftsman, is the son of a prominent merchant. Their home is furnished on North T Street and the wedding is expected in the near future.
The renowned French composer and first delegate of the Franco American commission for cultural relations arrived in New York at eighty years old. He plans a three month stay visiting several American cities and will be hosted by French societies across the country.
A spring hat from 1915 style was found in West Side School House Park on Wednesday night after a couple left in the dark. The hat is a pull down straw with blue passes and is displayed at City Hall with a placard. The owner can recover it by calling at the police station with her name. George Hall traveled from Heltonville Thursday and will proceed to Bloomington then Nashville in Brown County to decorate on Sunday.
Mrs. William Chatman of Bryantsville appeared Thursday under advisement before Justice Malott. The session referenced a case titled Seduction Gas Valley Glu and involved discussions of the proceedings and possible rulings.
The suit for seduction against Ernest Wires by Sarah Crockerham was tried before Justice Malott and taken under advisement. A paternity suit was filed against Wires Thursday and will be heard by Justice Malott Tuesday at 1 30 p.m. The Valley Club met at Bryantsville with Mrs. William Chatman to discuss Bread Making.
An inquest conducted Thursday in Justice Malott's Court by Drs. Norman and Voyles found Joseph Ikerd aged 72 to be insane. He suffers a breakdown but there is hope for recovery, and a commitment effort will seek admission to the Insane Hospital in Madison for treatment.
Agricultural Agent Charles J. Jones notes rainfall since January 1 1915 at Bedford mostly below normal except May. By May 26 total for May reached 9.8 inches above normal, with heaviest two-year rainfall May 25–26. Advises deep plowing and mulching to conserve soil moisture for a potential bumper corn and hay crop despite a dry summer ahead.
Mrs Bowers wife of engineer Charles Bowers who runs the switch engine in Southeastern yards returns with her two children to Terre Haute after a brief visit to her husband and father in this city. Mrs William Standish of Salem mother of S H Standish who fractured her hip Tuesday night is recovering as expected. Mr Standish arrived from Salem last night and Miss Jeanette Standish is due home this evening.
The Bedford band concert scheduled for Wednesday night was postponed due to cold and wet weather. A Friday reschedule is possible if conditions improve. otherwise the event may be cancelled.
