Lawrenceport Town History and Early Industry Details
Lawrenceport laid out May 1 with 179 lots across twelve blocks. Streets run east west and north south at the mouth of Fishing Creek on White River near the old Louisville to Lafayette state road crossing. S P Moore started the first merchandising and built the grist mill. Littell and Throckmorton owned the store and mill after him, rebuilt the mill in 1453. The mill later passed to S. S. Barnes then Henry Harmyer, whose ownership saw a dam dispute in 1880 when farmers tore out the obstruction, leading to costly litigation and a diminished value. The town is named for Joseph Lawrence, an early landowner. Bishop Roberts was a notable Methodist Episcopal minister resident, with Dr Keight among early physicians. After the Ohio and Mississippi Railroad, Lawrenceport declined as Mitchell and Tunnelton grew. Pork packing flourished in early days, shipped to New Orleans.
