Bank Burglary in Montgomery Nets 3500 Cash and Bonds

The First National Bank of Montgomery near Washington Indiana was robbed in the early morning. Loot valued at 3500 dollars in cash and 3600 dollars in government bonds disappeared after five nitroglycerin blasts opened the safe. Two witnesses watched but did not alarm guards fearing gunfire from two armed robbers patrolling outside. The robbers fled on a hand car toward the B and O Southwestern railroad, abandoning the car near a coal mine after about half a mile. No trace of the pair was found. The bonds are coupon payable to beaver and easily cashed. The bank carries 5000 dollars burglary insurance and has no night watchman. The bank president is Dr. J M Crawford of Cincinnati. director William Dudley Foulke is noted. The piece notes there will be no material business disruption since principal funds are not kept there. The criminals used nitroglycerine and a wedge to force the safe open, with explosions about every fifteen minutes. A bottle of nitroglycerin was left on the floor inside the bank. A yet unidentified man described as lame was suspected after a prior visit to Montgomery by a supposed detective. The second item reports a Presbyterian Woman's Missionary Society meeting on Wednesday evening at Mrs. F. D. Norton’s home followed by a hymn-like appeal for gifts.
