A severe storm system tore through Bedford and surrounding areas Wednesday evening, bringing hail, waterspouts, and a tornado that damaged Englewood and many farms. Homes, orchards, barns, and outbuildings were destroyed, with several families injured but alive. Rail lines and roads suffered major washouts, delaying trains and isolating parts of the region.
A massive cyclone devastated Indiana Illinois Missouri and surrounding states killing many and causing property losses running into millions. The storm wrecked bridges tracks and buildings, washed rivers wider, toppled towers and flooded basements. Rail lines and power were disrupted as relief trains moved to Morgan mount.
United Press reports a sweeping July storm across Cincinnati Vincennes Louisville and St. Louis leaving about forty dead and millions in damage. Clara Riley age seventeen died in a farmhouse collapse near Vincennes while river wrecks and derailed trains added to the toll.
New York July 8 Big transport liner Minnehaha carrying ammunition for Liverpool caught fire on board and a blast occurred in a hold Wireless messages state the fire is under control Officials believe the explosion stemmed from a dynamite trunk aboard the ship Frank Holt strapped in the hold
Brownsville Texas July 8 twelve or fourteen shots fired from ambush on U S Cavalry troops near today none injured no trace of shooters believed Mexican raiders Mexicans today threatened city saying would attack banks
Glenn Randolph of Indianapolis was bitten on his right leg by a band rattler in Brown County while hunting with George Cookston. They cut the wound with a knife squeezed out blood and drank whiskey to counteract the venom. The leg swelled then subsided and Randolph recovered. The men drove to seek a doctor and more whiskey after the bite.
