Short sighted argument on American shipbuilding costs

Debates over a shipping bill note that even if U S ship costs match Britain the operating advantage favors British ships by 35 percent. Protection has grown steel manufacturing while shipyards lack steady support. If the United States can export steel products, it can export ships once costs are equal. Foreign plants would join U S shipbuilding to meet 2,000,000 tons annual world demand. British ships built cheaply draw buyers. Americans could win if costs drop.
