A 93 year old Indiana veteran, Hugh Dewitt, famed for constructing his own walnut coffin and a brick lined grave with a Bedford stone monument, lies at the Indiana State Soldiers Home after a life of bachelorhood and self prepared death. He carved his epitaph himself.
A grave marker from 1900 bears a tomb inscription and a space for death date. The coffin, washed away by last fall’s flood, was recovered. Dewitt, a Bible student in an old folks’ home, spoke often of death and burial and attracted many visitors.
A mass meeting last night saw J. E. Henley urge citizens to reject the old 1.25 rate and back a competing company. About $25,000 has been pledged toward forming a rival firm, with $75,000 likely needed. The Home Company has lost many lines, and a stockholders meeting is planned in two weeks to elect directors. Some caution compromise voices warn against two rival firms and extended disruption. Secretary Monteith of Louisville pledges no quarter.
Judge Landis presides as a federal grand jury is impaneled in Chicago. Indictments include Etta McLain and Alexander Gordee for conspiring to remove documents from the district attorney’s office tied to the Walsh case. Wallon stayed his sentence. others were sent back to jail. Joseph Wilson and John Young were given an option to leave town and departed for another climate.
Mrs Charles Henry Strupe hosted a Bridge Whist Club gathering at North K Street with honors for Mrs Green and Miss Anna Green of Kansas City. Mrs Maurice McGrath top-scored among town guests and Miss Anna Green among out-of-town guests, each receiving a picture. Refreshments included pressed chicken fruit salad hot biscuits and coffee. Mrs George Dugan hosted a second evening at West Fourteenth Street for her Bridge Club with house guests Mrs Green and Miss Anna Green. Mrs Maurice McGrath won the ladies prize a bottle of toilet water while Mr Maurice McGrath won a deck of cards. A Dutch lunch followed by music and dancing continued late.
State Game Commissioner Sweeney pushes a 4500 acre game preserve north and west of Dark Hollow. Farmers sign to convert land into a preserve stocked by the State Game Warden. Game cannot be killed for three years. rewards offered for poacher arrests and convictions. Poultry will stock pheasants and quail fed by farmers in winter.
Edith Thorne and Chester Bates were married at 6 p.m. Sunday at the First Christian church parsonage with Rev. Melvin Putman officiating. The bride is the daughter of Louise Thorne of 1822 South I Street and formerly worked at the Central Union telephone exchange. The groom is the son of carpenter Thomas Bates and described as exemplary.
Mrs. Sarah Kern a widow aged 75 died at her Williams home Sunday night at 7 o'clock Funeral will be at Old Union near Fayetteville Tuesday at 11 o'clock S and Hattie 13 days old daughter of Mrs Ruth McCain died Saturday at Mrs Harper s North street funeral and interment this afternoon at Beech Grove Cemetery
A Civil War era letter written by David H. Sumney to his brother Daniel Sumney in Washington County Pennsylvania has traveled across the country for 43 years and only recently returned to the writer. It laments losing a pair of new stout boots stolen elsewhere and notes the envelope nearly wore through after passing through the local post office.
Pitman gained victory on merit and the outcome of Saturday's contest will be ratified at the general election. Dan Moore, a well known young man, won the sheriff race by entering the race peacefully and canvassing with dignity. His quiet conduct and earnest approach led to his victory and he will serve fearlessly and creditably. Charley Allen is again on hand.
A warrant was issued for Ben Hazelwood a barber on a false statement to obtain liquor. Officers say evidence came from a man in police court charged with public intoxication who testified Hazelwood supplied the liquor. Hazelwood allegedly obtained it from a drug store claiming medical or educational use. The case may be pressed vigorously. Also, Mrs. Joel McCoy 67 died after an illness following a wood-chopping death of her husband and son by Edward Ford near Unionville Monroe County.
Milton Norgan a longtime Bedford resident aged 78 died after a two day illness from heart trouble. He suffered a fall from heart pain Friday in his yard on South K street and a ruptured blood vessel was noted by the physician. He is survived by a widow three daughters and a son Mrs Charles Hirscher Samuel Norgan both of Bedford Mrs Edward Garvey of Indianapolis and Mrs Richard Hollis of Marion two sisters and a brother in Ohio and a brother in Martin county.
The Democratic State central committee issued the call for Indiana Democrats to meet at Tomlinson hall on March 25 and 26 to adopt a platform elect presidential electors select delegates to the national convention and nominate state officers including Governor Lieutenant Governor Secretary of State Auditor Treasurer Attorney General and others. The convention will appoint 1 271 delegates with 686 needed for a choice and Lawrence county is allocated thirteen delegates.
In Gosport an outbreak of the grip has proved deadly with five deaths in ten days. The decedents include Wm. Stanton aged 70, Garriott Brewer 87, Mrs. Emily Brassier 81, Barney Lukenbill 82, and Mrs. George Snowden 76, totaling 396 years.
The Republican National Committee aims for a long Chicago convention with five day admission tickets but some members predict a six day gathering possibly stretching into the next week. Only two six day GOP conventions occurred in 1888 and 1880.

Frank Gilbert aged about sixty renewed his youth on a pond north of the city yesterday afternoon. An old champion ice skater he skated with ease and performed fancy figures that impressed younger onlookers. He had once taught John Kramer of this city who later became Chicago’s city champion in skating.
