The Merchant Marine Bill and American Shipping
The piece argues Congress must end delays on ship subsidy legislation to stop draining U S resources to foreign ship owners. It outlines nine bill concepts including registry rewards for American ships, limited foreign-built ship admittance, free mail carriage, funded seafaring education, annual and term limits, and open opportunities for all Americans to invest in shipbuilding while controlling total payouts. It urges practical, effective action to build an American merchant marine.

American shipping trade relies on foreign ships for carry
The speaker notes that 20 million dollars yearly paid to foreign ship owners for U S carrying is not proof of a thriving shipyard. He argues if Americans did foreign carrying, revenue would double for American workers and the nation. He claims foreign demand drives shipyard activity, not domestic orders.

American vs Foreign Ships Debate on National Shipping Policy
The article argues for expanding an American merchant marine under the U.S. flag through protectionist or subsidy measures, noting the 1792 registry ban, party splits on policy, and a Ship Subsidy bill. It highlights public sentiment for more U.S. built ships, domestic shipyards, and keeping trade ships under the American flag to bolster exports and foreign markets.
Shipping Dependence Undermines National Independence
A nation relying mainly on foreign ships for ocean carriage cannot be truly independent. The United States faces direct concern with the war or peace of the countries whose vessels it depends on for essential maritime carrying. Immediate reform is urged.

Ocean transportation funds shift impact on American workers
The text argues that the $200,000,000 yearly ocean transportation payment affects Americans or foreigners. It asserts that if foreigners receive most of the funds, American labor loses jobs.

Why Our Shipping Declines Across Foreign Trade
The piece explains high American shipbuilding and crew costs plus foreign subsidies as the main reasons American ships struggle against British rivals. It argues for policy action to protect and develop U S shipping and notes the huge sums paid to foreign shipowners since the Civil War and projected future costs.
Foreign lobby fights revival of American merchant marine
The piece argues a powerful foreign lobby in Washington opposes a pending bill to boost American shipping in foreign trade. It claims foreigners hold a $175 to $200 million stake against U S measures, while Americans lack equivalent influence. It asserts press and public misperception and warns defeat would still cost Americans by maintaining current higher payments to foreign ship owners.

The Case for a Strong American Merchant Marine
The article argues the U S relies heavily on foreign ships for trade. It cites Britain and Germany carrying about 75 percent of U S commerce while American ships handle 9 percent. It warns war could disrupt shipping, raise insurance, and flood markets with surplus crops unless Congress acts to bolster domestic shipping and policies.
Congress Should Not Adjourn Without Aiming At Shipping Dependence
The article argues Congress must act to reduce U S dependence on foreign shipping for exports and imports. It warns opposition to pro American shipping measures aids foreign carriers, noting 20 million dollars in subsidies flow to merchant ships and 200 million dollars in value linked to imports and exports benefiting foreign powers. Lack of sea presence hurts national defense and trade growth.

Shipbuilding costs and foreign competition essay
The passage argues that once U S shipyards reach steady production for foreign trade they could steadily reduce costs. It notes current weak output for that trade shows America cannot compete with foreign shipbuilders regardless of the reasons given.
