About forty children gathered at Mr and Mrs James O Connell home at 17th and L streets Thursday afternoon to celebrate the boy's fourth birthday. Mrs O Connell and Miss Glenn Sears hosted the party with games, a decorated dining room, a huge cake and candy bag favors for guests including Paul Tyre Glenn Daugherty Paul Richardson Rodger Cole Leslie Cole Charlie Crawford and many others.
A head on collision occurred Saturday evening on the French Lick branch of the Monon between passenger train No 29 West bound and extra work train No 101 East bound. Conductor John Bills and Engineer Len Caldwell led the passenger train while Engineer Sebastian Rusher led the work train. The crash resulted from a mis understanding of orders with Engineer Caldwell sustaining a broken arm and body bruises while Engineer Rusher endured nervous prostration. Passengers were shaken. one man Brazzel of Oolitic was mildly injured and sent home. Both locomotives were wrecked and towed to LaFayette for repairs as Bloomington wrecking crew cleared debris through the night. A parade formed at noon, veterans marched to the opera house for a sumptuous repast by the Relief Corps, followed by speeches and a camp fire at the G A R hall to close the day.
Chief Myers and the night force raided three upstairs gambling rooms on 16th Street over Ragsdale s Watson s and Brown s saloons Saturday night. Eight men were arrested for gaming and parphernalia including seven tables chips and cards seized. The scene drew holiday shoppers who cheered officers as they exited with evidence.

State Chemist H. E. Barnard reports 130 samples from groceries and drug stores with only eleven absolutely genuine vanilla extracts. Most are artificial or diluted. prune juice colors disguise real vanilla and wood alcohol is present in few samples, while many contain toxic adulterants.

Pierce Carter fourteen-year-old son of Mr and Mrs T W Carter of 1615 West Sixteenth Street underwent amputation of his left leg Monday after blood poisoning developed in his illness. Dr Freeland performed the operation and the patient is resting well despite nervous shock.
Sheriff brought Gordon R. Gauld from Crawfordsville after an affidavit filed by Thomas A. Martin charged him with uttering a check for 30 dollars on Citizen's Bank with insufficient funds. The court sustained a motion to quash the indictment and Gauld posted bond. further actions against Martin for liquor-law violations were anticipated.
J W Thompson former S I general manager and Bruce Be ment Terre Haute returned from eight weeks in old Mexico. They hunted on foot with a pack of eleven hounds and a guide. Thompson killed a large cinnamon bear and two mountain lions along with several deer.
