A period ad extols Dr. Pierce Favorite Prescription as a safe non alcoholic tonic for hardworking women and expectant mothers. It claims to prevent surgery, ease childbirth, and lists its ingredients openly. Also promotes Dr. Pierce Pleasant Pellets for constipation as a candy like remedy.
A bondholders committee including George W. Young Rafael Gavin Galin Stone A Merritt Taylor and W W Gurley has been formed after the August 1 default on interest due on the Southern Indiana Railway Company 4 percent fifty year gold bonds The move aims at reorganizing the indebted railway which owns 237 miles of lines in Indiana and controls coal interests and the Chicago Southern Railway.
John Stewart reported his horse and buggy taken to Leesville on May 15 by a stranger who sought a ride. Chief Moritz and Deputy Robertson arrested a suspect on South Chestnut street after a failed $1.25 for a $12.50 check offer. Mayor Kyte postponed the trial to Saturday morning.

Taxable property across Indiana rose by about 200 million dollars over four years. The Washington Democrat recalls a June lightning strike on Starlin Woodruff's Van Buren township dwelling that sent wood splinters into his daughter Blanche’s ankle. A two inch oak splinter, two thick as a pencil lead, was recovered from her leg above the ankle. Remarkably she has kept up housework since the incident. The father preserves the wood for skeptics.
The Republican and Democratic central committees of Monroe County signed a compact today pledging not to resort to money or whisky to influence votes in the coming campaign. The agreement, previously in place last cycle, was again endorsed by both party chairmen.
Chris Clements a carpenter at the Southern Indiana railroad shops sustained a severe injury to his right hand on Friday while operating a large air driven augur. His clothing became entangled and his hand was lacerated as he tried to free himself.
Truston Edwards of Mitchell appeared in police court Saturday on a public intoxication charge. Arrested by Patrolman Moore, he pleaded not guilty and trial was set for 3 pm. Unable to post bond, he changed his plea and was fined 1 dollar plus costs.
Gladys Eberhart, 17, appeared with Detective Lapaille at police headquarters and spoke with Capt. Maher about alleged abuse by her uncle John W. Marsh. She plans to return home with him and then move to Cincinnati to live with a sister.
Bloomingtons Mayor Claud G Malott with friends camping on White River near Tunnelton tried to lay a trot line. He rolled up his $12 trousers and waded in but misjudged depth, slipping under and surfacing amid laughter, earning a soggy misadventure.
The funeral for Joseph Burnham drowned Wednesday morning in White River near Kelly Castle was held at the First Presbyterian church at 3 p.m. Friday. Many friends attended. Interment followed at Mitchell. Out‑of‑town mourners included Mrs Hazelwood and daughter from New Albany, Roy Graham of Jeffersonville, and numerous relatives from Mitchell, Seymour, Crawfordsville, Salem, Mechanicsburg, Ohio, and Cincinnati.
Indiana state statistician says overborrowing reports likely stem from clerical errors as Evansville Madison New Albany Lafayette and Lawrenceburg show large excess borrowings in 1908. Gas City overran by 60 cents while several others exceeded limits though a margin remained Indianapolis borrowed far under its capacity with a sizable unused margin.
In Brownstown a large gathering of Peoples State Bank depositors voiced dissatisfaction with prospects after the bank’s closure over a year ago. The 101 year old Grandma Turley enjoyed her first automobile ride with Dr Patton in his new Cadillac. The doctor accompanied her to town then toured the town, a photo was taken with Mrs Turley in the car. Mer Littell offers to supply copies of the picture. A daughter was born to Mr and Mrs George Ray on South G Street.
A message from Los Angeles reports T M Drake former Bedford resident died yesterday from paralysis at about 72. A veteran and G A R member born in Millersburg Kentucky he moved to Los Angeles last October and is survived by four sons Charles Shirley James and Ruther Drake.
Delegates approve resolutions backing county option laws over saloon proliferation and condemn lawlessness, while pledging loyalty to the Catholic Church. A Rome cablegram thanks the gathering and Cardinal Merry Del Val. Officers elected include Rev. James T. Coffey president and Edwin Mulready secretary.

Fred Stipp of Erie learns his son-in-law A L Bauhard of Bristol Tennessee is seriously ill. Diagnosed with typhoid fever, hospital care revealed stomach cancer with no hope. If death occurs the body will be brought to Martinsville for interment per his wish. Bauhard married Louella Stipp in 1902.
The Bloomington Telephone reports two local tales as truth. George Roger, a barber, caught a bass weighing 5 pounds 14 ounces at the abandoned Consolidated quarry hole and shows the fish head at his shop. Samuel Brown killed a rattlesnake in Brown County that had eight rattles and a button, noting the snake’s move toward Lawrence County amid county commissioner talk and John D. Morgan’s appointment as justice of the peace.
Nancy C. Vantuyle aged 75 years 2 months 21 days died at her Springville home August 10 1908 born May 20 1833 Luzerne County Penn married Ziba R. Vantuyle April 16 1852 they had six children two daughters and four sons moved near Thorntown Ind in 1853 husband and half the children predeceased her member of the Christian church of Springville praised as a model mother with a hopeful life and a smiling helping hand to all who knew her
Oscar Anderson, an employee of the P M B stone company, suffered a painful accident Friday while driving large steel spikes with a sledge. A misstrike sent his feet slipping, causing him to fall onto the sharp edge of a steel drum and cutting the tack of his right hand quite severely.
Washington reports the Baltimore Sun, a Democratic paper, will oppose Bryan and back Taft in the current campaign. The Sun, Maryland’s oldest newspaper, has long influenced state politics and may tilt the state toward Taft as the Republican ticket gains support.

Fannie F. Howell files suit for divorce from Edward M. Howell citing cruel and inhuman treatment. The complaint states they married July 9 1898 and separated August 31 1905 with no cohabitation since. She says he called her vile names and abandoned her August 31 1905 and has provided no support.
John Gratzer retires after two years as Chief of Police and is replaced by Charles A. Payne this morning. Gratzer will take a ten day paid vacation and has not decided his future business plans or whether he will accept a police force offer.
A morning chase through the eastern city and two miles into the country staged a race between W. C. Hamilton, Chief Moritz, and Officer Campbell. Campbell, linked to the Indiana Reformatory, came to review reports about Hamilton's parole status and related concerns.
Walter E. Hottell as receiver sold the quarry plant and machinery yesterday in Bloomington to satisfy mortgage holders. Park County State Bank bought the quarry for Five thousand dollars. Ferguson and Fulwider took machinery for fifteen hundred. Monroe County State Bank secured the remaining machine part for one thousand. Banks will dispose of the quarry as they do not plan to operate it. Monarch Quarry company will incur a twenty five thousand dollar loss due to the sale. The quarries began about five years ago with fifty thousand dollars in Monroe County capital. Parke County Bank seized the property to protect a large claim against the quarry.
James M. Nolan, formerly superintendent of the McMillen Mill, has signed final papers to acquire the Harry Eakin mill and nearby plant for 3500 dollars. The planing mill will be sold, and a fine cut stone mill with 1500 dollars of investment will be installed near the Monon yards in Bloomington.
Miss Ethel Smith, a Mt. Vernon home student boarding at the dormitory, suffered a jaw dislocation this morning. Dr. J. E. Holland treated her with chloroform and reset the jaw. the injury recurred after revival, and a bandage may be needed for a time.
