An advertisement extols Dr. Pierce's Golden Medical Discovery to treat torpid liver by improving digestion and nutrition. It claims to restore stomach activity, boost blood forming secretions, cleanse toxins, and relieve liver burden. Warns against indigestible foods and urges regular use evidence vows its non secret and known composition.
In Wheatland Indiana Rev F S Miller resigns after a family separation that divided the congregation. Mrs Miller says she grew tired of him and arranged for her brother J P Canfield to take her back to Chattanooga. Presiding elder C E Ashbury works to steady the situation and a supply pastor will serve until September. Miller’s origins were Shoals with Edwin Ray church connections.
Mrs Christina McCaffrey and sister Mrs Mary Deedes reunited after fifty five years with roots traced to Ireland. The pair, once separated in youth, had lived in Lowell and elsewhere before Mrs McCaffrey, now 72, located in St Louis and later reconnecting with family in Rushville and St. Louis, culminating in a heartfelt meeting in their later years.
John McGee of Jeffersonville was attacked when a common house fly stung his hand and led to blood poisoning with a severe arm swelling. Doctors treated him as inflammation subsided and officials say danger is over though full use of the limb is months away. The illness is believed to have spread from poison the fly had ingested elsewhere.
W F Stilwell & Co of Lafayette secured the contract to build a four room brick veneer school house at Heltonville. The bid totaled 8000 dollars and the tract was awarded by Nichols & Son, Bloomington architects.
The Modern Woodmen of America state log rolling will be held in Vincennes on August 14 and 15 attracting several thousand people for two or three days. Dedford plans to bid for hosting next year, while Linton argues it would be ideal as a major railroad town besides Indianapolis.
Mrs Pearl Higgins sues her husband for divorce alleging fraud and seeks $1,000 in damages. The filing occurred Wednesday.
The Monon fire department announces promotions across the run crews. Reitz is assigned as engineer, Fred K mans the engine, Scheehier is reassigned with Eng and John Vaughan will run with Engineer vehi Crawford.
A fragment from a Blyomington Telephone listing shows a clipped ad with stray letters and phrases about hats and curios. The unreadable text hints at shop items and prices but is largely illegible.
A civil action filed this week seeks twenty thousand dollars in damages from the Southern Rail Company. The plaintiff alleges injuries from a 1908 incident involving a freight or passenger train and names several involved parties and amounts claimed. Further court action is sought to resolve the dispute.

The Terre Haute Brewery sues Henry Switz in Blooming ton Circuit Court claiming 8500 in beer bought from July to September 1905 remained unpaid. Switz’s security refuses to pay while attorneys John Riddle for the brewery and Slinkard Hudson for Switz are involved.
Mr. and Mrs. W. E. McCormick leave Monday for the old McCormick homestead on the Ohio river. They will enjoy Mr. McCormick's vacation and visit the area where he owns land and manages farms in the district.
At the meeting last night Marshal Johns was authorized to secure ice for barrels around the square so visitors have drinking water. The council also authorized other police actions as one or more officers were sent to Indianapolis.
Special Judge J E Robbins vacated the bench in the Caleb Powers case after an affidavit alleging prejudice. He denied the charges but said it was impossible to sit when accused of unfairness. The ruling caused shock and a disturbance in the Georgetown court as attorneys and spectators reacted. The judge offered to notify the governor and for a new judge to be assigned.
Caleb Powers defense witness Brutus Combs and a young Negro boy were killed when struck by a Frankfort and Cincinnati train while crossing a trestle near Georgetown Kentucky. Combs had been in the courthouse and testified for the defense in Goebel related cases before his death.
Katherine Moneghan of Elwood was attacked by four men who emerged from behind a building. She punched one, knocked down another, grabbed hair from a third, and chased a fourth, forcing the capture of names of all associates. She released the first offender after a promise to reform.
Miss Myrtle Ingalls named winner in Atlantic City contest conducted by Friedman the shoe man. Winning amount listed as 178.45 dollars, attested correct by J B Burton assistant cashier of Bedford National Bank. Trip deemed delightful and highly coveted by Bedford’s young ladies.
George B. Lockwood, editor of the Myrion Chronicle, has been appointed private secretary to Vice President Fairbanks. The salary was increased by the last Congress from 2,000 to 4,000 dollars a year. Lockwood formerly served as private secretary to Governor Durbin of Indiana.
A Monon freight brakeman, on duty on northbound train 42, lay unconscious and exposed on the engine pilot after drinking. After the fireman aroused him, the brakeman half climbed from the pilot and struggled as the train moved to a siding at the Bedford crossing, sparking fears of a fatal fall.
Engine 28 pulling the Bedford Bloom division hit a broken rail three miles east of Linton. Engineer James Stevens and his fireman escaped injury after the plunge and rollover. Wrecking crews from Bloomington cleared the wreck as traffic on the west end was halted. The train runs from Bedford to the mines daily. A Bloomington student joked about discovering America, remarking he didn’t know it had been lost.
The two year old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Daugherty was kicked by their family horse while playing near its heels Friday morning. The blow split the lip and knocked out several teeth, rendering her unconscious. Dr. Emery attended and the child was taken home in stable condition with no current danger.
Onis Melton and Robert Gowen of the city returned from Louisville after the Louisville Hospital College of Medicine commencement at the Mason ic theater. Both received gold medals for anatomy work in the past year. Gowen’s medal was sent home as he was absent. the pair have two years of study and will spend the summer here.
Miss Sylvia Harris eldest daughter of Mr and Mrs Robert Harris of South I street is in a serious condition with a threatened loss of an eye. She had been A F Dalton's stenographer but took a leave last Saturday to visit an aunt in West Baden seeking rest. Her eyes worsened and her aunt Mrs Prow brought her home Friday.
Ida Bruce filed suit in the Lawrence Circuit Court to forfeit a $100 bond given by Frank Jones with Edward Lackey as surety for Jones's appearance. Jones was ordered to pay funds for Ida Bruce’s children and, failing to do so, was jailed for contempt. He later posted $100 with Lackey as surety, but did not appear at the last term, causing the bond to be declared defaulted.
Detective James M. Myers of the B&O secret service rounds up seven hoboes from Mitchell for vagrancy and aims to curb theft on night trains. The suspects Sam Johnson Roy Lehigh Robert Wallace John Peters Walter Harris Frank McCue face 15 days and will be put to work on streets to offset county board costs. Police note robberies along the B&O linked to tramps and pledge harsh action to deter travel.
State Pure Food Commissioner orders saloonmen to sell only properly labeled whiskey and other drinks under Indiana law. Beers tested pure. many adulterated wines and rums to be targeted. inspectors to sample and analyze liquor. Also reports Alfred Davis, 10, burned by melted lead in a baseball bat, losing an eye.
Mr and Mrs Cal Truelove and a cousin from Plainville were critically ill ten to twelve hours after eating corn bread tainted with rat poison. They survived after medical care. Poison likely contaminated grain at the mill, while none of the Truelove children ate the bread. Miss Clementine Victor of Indianapolis visits Miss Glenn Sears on South L Street.
Governor Beckham has not secured a judge to preside over Caleb Powers trial for Goebel assassination complicity. The proceeding is not expected before the November term. Powers and lawyers appear despondent over the death of Tallow Dick Combs who was killed by a train after being released on bond as an accessory. Combs was subpoenaed as a witness in Jim Howard’s case set for October and reportedly warned to testify as the state wishes. A conference yielded a planned public reply to Judge Robbins’ decision stating Powers will not preside, to be released Saturday.
Young Arthur Strange sought to detain Miss Pearl McGee six miles south of Odon. She planned to travel to Vincennes but changed plans after his threats. He confessed to intoxication, pled guilty before Squire Tewell, and was fined ten dollars and seventy cents, later settled for eight dollars and seventy cents.
Bloomington horseman G A Buskirk promotes a multi city Indiana circuit with Sullivan Bedford Bloomington Washington and Vincennes named as core stops. Backed by funds and local pledges the plan aims for three racing days per city and a profitable venture with possible expansion. A organizing meeting in Bloomington is hoped to finalize details.
Invitations announced the marriage of Miss Bertha Reuter and Henry Clyde Bishop of Indianapolis. The ceremony is set for August 12 at the bride’s parents home, with the couple to live at 1425 East Ohio Street after the wedding.
The Bloomington Star notes a claim that Harry Kinney a Monon freight brakeman had $12 trousers stolen. The paper doubts the story asking who owns such costly trousers. It also mentions Miss Mattie Sears leaving for Paragon to visit relatives.

Homer Spriggs of the east of Bloomington stirred a four foot rattlesnake while using a mowing machine. The serpent chased a nearby boy until the lad was nearly scared. Men rushed to help and killed the snake which had ten rattles.
Herman Albright of four miles east of Oaktown suffered severe facial injuries while unloading hay when a hay carrier pulley broke. The eye of the gilley struck his face, fracturing his jaw in three places and badly shattering the bone.
Plessie Blake of the S I shops suffered a severe thumb injury while helping move a large wheel on Thursday afternoon. The thumb was amputated after Dr J T Freeland performed the operation and dressed the wound.
X Johnson of Bedford was in the city arranging the debut of the Kirkwood avenue opera house for next Monday night with the Deagon Theatre Co. for a one week engagement. The company includes a band and orchestra, and the house is expected to run as a Vaudeville theatre after the season opens.
A large crowd watched Oolitic lose to Linton 2 to 3 in a Sunday ball game. Miss Mary Kimbrel travelled to Chicago on Saturday night.
Grace Warren, a 16 year old Mitchell girl, appeared before Judge Brooks in Juvenile court and pleaded guilty to larceny involving ladies apparel valued at 40 dollars from James Batman's home. She was placed on probation for future good behavior after the items were returned to the owner.
Mrs. Henry Powell of New Castle filed a divorce complaint after a quarrel spurred by a milk spill. She beat her husband in a race to the attorney’s home and retained C. H. Beard, but withdrew the complaint two hours later saying she and her husband had kissed and made up. The couple, near 70, are pioneer residents of the city.
Dr. Hunter of the County Board of Health reports 37 deaths in Bedford and nearby areas in July, averaging over one per day. Chronic disease and cholera infantum are identified as the main causes.
Late Thursday a heavily loaded Miller & Meadows wagon wrecked at Oolitic when the wagon broke its tongue. Blind youth Arthur Beyers of Highland Park, on the wagon with driver Rube Glimpse, leaped to safety and likely saved his life. The goods suffered little, though the horses pulled up after the fall.
Charles Payne a longtime Bedford police officer will take a brief vacation after falling ill with a severe cold. He has been off duty since last night and plans to recover and visit doctors. Mrs Henry McBride and daughter Lula returned home after visiting Bloomington friends. Ely of Terre Haute visited his wife with Mr and Mrs Edwin Shirk.
