Senior portraits were taken September 23 and 24 at Bedford High School for the 1958 yearbook. Thirty-five group pictures were shot September 24 and 25 for the Torch yearbook, by photographer C D Cochran from Des Moines who spent a day and a half on each shoot with complete photographic equipment.
The BHS typing II class uses football terms in a themed plan by Mrs. Louise Hallenbeck. Student typing scores are posted and mapped onto a miniature grid iron field with yard markers and goal posts to reach a touchdown. Each three minute typing test earns ten yards toward the ball advancing.
Six BHS students were interviewed about their holiday activities on September 20 the day school dismissed for the Adams Taylor County Teacher's Institute at BHS. Russell Akers stayed home and worked on the farm. Norma Bristow played in the band concert and left town. Larry Hoffman stayed home and built a fence. Jesse Everhart spent the day out of town. Larry McGee hunted with Larry Hatfield. Sharon Lyons also spent the day out of town.
BHS freshmen agriculture students aiming to join the Future Farmers of America undergo a friendly initiation. The greenhands must wear green gloves or dye their hands green for the informal initiation day. They are formally accepted at the October meeting of the local FFA club sponsored by Norman Annan, where each new member receives a bronze FFA emblem symbolizing acceptance.
Thirty one BHS students are named to six vocal groups by Mrs Bonnie Brown. Groups include Girls quartet Lois Buzzard Elaine Cummings Dixie Lee Pam Straight and others across Girls sextet trio Boys double quartet double mixed quartet and Madrigal with multiple named students.
Julia Henry was elected by the BHS Y Teens to be the Y Teen candidate for president at the annual fall conference in Clarinda on October 5. Candidates will speak three minutes on how they can help the club and why she deserves the post with the theme How Do You Measure Up in Faith Happiness State of thought. A tea will follow initiation hosted by the mothers as the mothers sponsor the event.
Regular journalism class work yields short items for the Bedford Times Press weekly section. Students include Janet Akers Mary Allen Norma Bristow Bonnie Carroll Barbara Harrison Virginia Haynie Myrna Henry Julia Meikle Rebecca Moore Lois Smalley Alberta Smith Janice Walston and Bob Dawson Bill Fellows Lowell Gilbert Harold Hatfield Larry Hoffman Charles Jones Larry Poore Dwayne Powell Bob Beck Lois Smalley Ed Thompson Warren Wilson and Jim Young.
John Smith, newly appointed Bedford junior high principal, praises the well organized but crowded schools and commends students as conscientious workers. A Cedar Falls native and Iowa State Teachers College graduate, he comes from Minburn Iowa, serves in the military 1953 1955 in Germany, and is married to Addie Mae with one son. He enjoys hunting fishing watching sports and the Chicago White Sox.
Deficiency notices were mailed out last week to the parents of those students of BHS who have been doing unsatisfactory work for the preceding three week period. This program is designed as a means of informing the parents of these students in the hope that the parents will get behind the student and encourage him to improve his school work. A space is provided on the form for the parent to indicate if he wishes to be kept informed about the future progress of his child.
A lavender grass skirt that decorated a Hawaiian mannequin at last May's BHS junior senior banquet disappeared after the event. The junior class asks for help locating the missing item and solving the mystery of its disappearance.
A borrowed skirt from the class is missing and must be returned. Anyone with information or possession should contact Miss Barbara Fox at the high school.
Bedford grade and high school students had activity ticket pictures taken Thursday September 12 by the Earl A Welch National School Photo Service. Images will appear on student identification tickets. prints are optional.
John Guenther of Bedford a Northwest Missouri State sophomore is named sports editor of the college newspaper announced by officials Friday. He is active in Bedford High School sports and majors in journalism. son of Mr and Mrs Harold Guenther of Bedford.
Two county tennis tournaments for high and grade school boys were approved by IHSSA official Lyle Quinn after review with sponsor Joe Whitaker. Ten high school entries are listed and several grade school players, with entries closing October 4 and eligibility for any county boy.
Matches will be played after school hours and on Saturdays and Sundays featuring Whitaker and other players. The schedule emphasizes weekend sessions with a focus on competitive rounds and skill development.
CLEARFIELD September 18 Circles of the Methodist church met with various hostesses. Darlene Larsen’s Circle with 21 present, Virginia Straight hosting entertainment. Hazel Maharry’s Circle with 11 members and 5 children. Agnes Bailey’s Circle with 17 present. Several members served refreshments. Local residents and visitors were noted, including Mr. and Mrs. Rue Keenan and others visiting in nearby homes.
Mrs Leonard Sabotka and family noted. Mr and Mrs Harry Black traveled to Harlan Denison and Council Bluffs to visit relatives. Tom Jameson returned home after 10 days in Ottumwa Iowa and Galesburg Illinois. The Presbyterian church Social Union held its annual Guest Day and Tea with 53 attendees. Highlights included a playette by Edna McMath and Vera Ferguson and guitar numbers by Hazel Robinson Effie Aukland Vera Morey and others. Refreshments were served. Additional visits and relocations are listed among local families and friends.
Attendees reported attending the County Legion and Auxiliary wiener roast on Monday evening at Con Wey, enjoying the community event and social gathering.
Mrs Verna Jenkins reports Rev James Hoskins of Lincoln Nebraska will host services at Holiness church September 27 28 and 29. He will speak Friday evening September 27 and again Sunday with a basket dinner after the 11 o clock preaching service. Everyone invited.
