Six BCHS students offer views on study habits and extracurriculars. They discuss effects of teachers study hall rules parental influence and time management including TV radio and phone use. The seniors junior and freshmen emphasize discipline and balance for future success.
The Bedford Public Library purchased a 10 volume set of The Book of Popular Science and a seven volume set of Lands and People for junior and senior high school reference use.
BCHS invites all senior girls to enter the General Mills ninth annual American Homemaker of Tomorrow contest. Test enrollment closes Oct 31 with a 50 minute knowledge exam on Dec 4. Top local winner earns a Betty Crocker pin and state consideration, plus a chance at a $1,500 college scholarship and an All-American opportunity. Second place earns $500.
Bedford school nurse Mrs. Helen OGrady says kindergarten and first grade pupils will soon have eyes and ears checked after weighings recorded last week. She notes the children appear in fine health.
Representatives from nine counties convene in Cres ton at 3 p m to train county officers and chairs of National and county educational associations. Taylor county officers listed include Miriam Brown Lenox president Margaret Schulz Bedford professional relations chairman Warren Stanton New Market publicity chairman and J Frank Nugent Bedford public relations and legislation chairman.
The district purchases three new buses Nos. 1 and 4 at the end of the school year. About 800 students are transported by district buses this year. New drivers Wetzel Campain Fickess Baker and Kettle join the staff alongside existing operators across blocks and gravity routes.
Seniors planning to take ACT exams must register and return forms to Principal J. Frank Nugent by Oct. 12. Materials are available in homerooms. The tests will be held on Nov. 10 at Creston and Red Oak with exact locations to be announced later.
BC High School Library adds 21 new titles led by A Nation of Sheep PT 109 and The Ugly American. Fiction and nonfiction volumes include Time to Stand Ship Afire Our Names Stranger at Killknock Ride Proud Rebel and more. About 35 additional volumes expected soon per Librarian Ruth Putnam.
Teachers will hold an all day meeting at Bedford Community High School from 8:30 to 3:30 while students take the first holiday of the year. The session centers on improved teaching with each junior high and high school teacher submitting three work related questions for discussion. A Joe Whitaker, county superintendent, is preparing the program.
BCHS will offer biochemistry this fall and electronics this spring. Dwayne Ayer explains biochemistry blends chemistry with biology for regular biology classes, with lecture and lab segments. Gary King will teach electronics contingent on new equipment, aiding three elementary schools with portable lab tables and furnishings.
In Bedford last week a man posing as John Quincy Adams entered Supt. Gerald C. Bryans office and announced he would take school pictures on October 8. The visitor, though resembling the historic figure, was said to be a living impersonator.
Mr and Mrs Joe Kennedy of Boise visited here last Tuesday with her aunt and uncle Mr and Mrs Ed Lock. Mrs Ester Smith of Lenox was also a visitor at the Lock home. Mrs Ed Lock learned her brother Charles Sullivan of Los Angeles Calif died Friday. Ben and Lewis Barkley of Clarinda were dinner guests of Mr and Mrs Estes Sprigg. Stella Palmer of Phoenix and her Andrew Palmer family were dinner guests Wednesday of Mr and Mrs Floyd Morehouse. The Legion Auxiliary met Monday afternoon. Horace Nickell and family attended the funeral of Mrs Ray Hamblin in St Joseph Saturday. Nellie Davis of Conway visited Wayne and Lila Kysar in Sioux City. Forest Posten left Monday for Washington. Leroy Johnson and family visited Donald Tribolet and family in Bedford Saturday. Sunday guests included Russell Johnson and family of Omaha Jessie Johnson of Clarinda Vern Melvin Hopkins Brice Johnson and Edward Johnson and families.

Church schedules and community events at Baptist Christian and Methodist churches are listed along with Garden Club and local birthdays and helpfully corrected name spellings.
