Cattle Feeders Day and County Farm Trends Highlight Extension Notes

Extension forester Jim Gottsacker urges walnut sellers to obtain 2 3 estimates before selling as demand climbs and trees reach saleable size. Iowa State will host Cattle Feeders Day Sept 2 with details to follow. The 1964 Farm Census shows Taylor County farms averaging 217 acres, a rise from 191 in 1959, and beef cows up from 6 781 to 19 858. Fertilizer use tripled, and corn plant disease root rot without a current cure is noted. Changes in lawn seeding timing, armyworm damage in later corn plantings, and urea use with corn silage for hay replacement are discussed along with pest notes and contacts.
