Bedford Bulldog guards fell 7 to 6 on Clarinda’s field as Jay Dee Fuerst and Lloyd Shumpler led late Cardinal defense. Bedford, hurt by turnovers and an injury to Basil Lucas, ends the season at 4 wins and 4 losses.
Coach Blaine Shupe plans a veteran five for the opener against Nodaway Cardinals on November 18. Key players include Max Dougherty Bull Hullinger Dick Wallace Basil Lucas Darrell Irwin Joe Beard and Jack Beemer with Don Turner Phil Bartlett and Bob Dougherty as strong reserves. Bedford finished second in the Bluegrass conference last season at 8-2 and released a busy schedule through January.
Nodaway Iowa notes a five veteran girls squad led by Ruth Ellis and four others and four lettered boys. A winter basketball schedule lists road and home games from November through February including Diagonal Braddyville Coln Bedford Blockton Prescott Sharpsburg Clearfield Conway Stanton and Gravity.
SHARPSBURG IA twelve girls are out for basketball this fall with six monogram winners on the squad. Coach Harold Byers five man squad has two veterans Buzz Chitty and Melvin Pfander to carry the burden this season. Osceola hosts Corydon in a Bluegrass conference finale while Mount Ayr leads the standings with 7 0 and 1 0 marks.
Kuhna has 17 monogram winners this fall as a nucleus for his basketball squads. Bomberettes from last year’s third place in the Wauhousie race include Gould Hammer Michal Stroburg McCain King Dillon Gould Weaver. Eight lettermen join the boys’ squad with Kemery among promising freshmen. Schedule dates follow with multiple towns listed for upcoming games.
Clearfield prepares for a basketball season behind Coach Jim Wright with nine veterans, seven seniors named Carroll Baker Jack Gourley Bob Linkyis Roger Mahoney Junior Parker Karl Shoenhair Dick Morey Vernia Horton and Jim Morey alongside younger players Carol Lee Abarr Darlene Crouse Phyllis Monk QG Qwendola Routh as squad depth.
Sharon McClintock and Hazel Parker are fetter winners. The schedule lists games and tourneys from Nov to Feb including waubonsie at Bedford, sectional tournaments for girls and boys. Key opponents include Conway Prescott Blockton Nodaway Gravity Sharpsburg Lenox Cromwell and Diagonal with home and away dates.
Prescott-Cromwell opened the season with a split as the Prescott girls rallied from a halftime deficit to win 46-34 behind Migs Sherer 19 and Jeanne Hollingsworth 21 for Cromwell. The Cromwell boys fell 46-30 led by Duane Young 15 and Wayne Victor 12 with McLaughlin 9 for Cromwell. Officials Marenholz and Lischer.
Nodaway high school girls opened the 1952-53 basketball campaign with two Waubonsee conference victories. Shirley Pond led the Cardinalettes with 23 points in a 49-40 win over Gravity Bearettes while Lorraine Eighmy poured in 28 for Gravity in a 44-43 Nodaway win. Duane Cerve scored 11 for the visitors. Referee: Walter Williams.
Lenox coach Jerry Roberts sextette needed overtime to beat Prescott 39 to 36. Georgia Grey scored 22 for Lenox while Jeanne Hollingsworth Netted 24 for Prescott. Lenox also defeated the Prescott second team 29 to 24 and beat Seymour 7 0 to finish the season with sixth place in the conference.
Coach Jim Wright's Clearfield Orioles crushed Thurman 85 to 20 on Wednesday night. Jack Gourley scored four touchdowns, Eddie Morey added two as freshmen and seven other backs also found the end zone. The win left Clearfield with a 3-3 record in the Southwest Iowa league and a fourth place finish.
Bedford finished third in Hawkeye Eight after a season of injuries and close losses. Key players sidelined included Orville Marsh Max Park Basil Lucas and Max Dougherty with several others limited. A upcoming East West basketball jamboree will feature Mount Ayr Bedford Lenox Lamont Osceola Leon Corydon Seymour with the West favored to win.
Tabor High defeated Coach George Du vall's Miners 32 to 21 on Friday night. Jim Watson scored a TD and extra point, Dennis added two rushing TDs, Carl Seegar had two TDs with one conversion, Milan Shaw assisted the offense, Larry Gaylord handled a conversion, Larry Sprague scored 20 for New Market, and Ron Wallace earned a Jones conversion.
Blockton students Duane Kettle and Norma Craven were named high school King and Queen at the Oct carnival while Wayne Kennery and Anna Dee Clymens won grade school honors. The event drew a large crowd and proceeds funded band uniforms. Obituary notes Frank W. Anderson, Blockton native, WWI veteran, died after a heart attack. Funeral held at Blockton Christian church with Veterans rites.
In Redding Blockton high teams opened the basketball season defeating Redding. The Blockton girls won 41 31 led by Vickie Gould 18 points while Shirley Powell added 13. The Blockton boys lost 61 32 to Redding as Lowell Howle scored 12 and Duane Kettle 9 for Blockton.

Denise Zimmerman of New Market is among 116 Drake University students in the bands this year. The Drake junior from Des Moines will major in music education in the College of Fine Arts.
