At the church Friday evening an alumni banquet laid plates for eighty. A two course dinner prepared by the Ladies Aid society followed a program. Officers for the new year were elected: Ada Cavner president, Mary Osmond vice president, Gertie Palmer secretary-treasurer.
Helen Straight hosted the Queen Esthers Monday afternoon with Thelma Paisley leading devotions and Rosaly n Walls guiding the lesson study. Refreshments were served. The next meeting will be with Genevieve Stafford.
Mrs E F Burch Mrs Ira Roberts and Mrs C A Haynes hosted the Philathea class Thursday at the church with Belle Norton as lesson leader. After the social hour attendees planned a noon meal for Royal Neighbor delegates and the public on Thursday May 27. Menu includes chicken and noodles mashed potatoes creamed peas salad pickles jelly rolls coffee and pie.
Rev J A Walls plans church school at ten followed by communion service at eleven ten in the morning worship. The League meets at seven and evening praise service at eight.
Commencement was held in the Conway high school auditorium on Thursday evening May 13. Senior awards and honors were announced with Rosalin Walls and Richard Cooper among top points earners. valedictorian Mildred Baxter and salutatorian Dorothy Robinson were named. The event featured music, a guest address by B. J. Williams of CCC College Des Moines, and an efficiency contest highlighting grades, attendance, and activities.
Seventh grade top boy John Allen Kiburz led with 218 points, followed by Doyle Robinson 164 points. Highest girl Effie Simmons scored 194, with Crystal Howes at 188. Junior High honor rolls show eighth grade leaders Wilma Donaldson 46, Nadine Besco Viola Besco 42, Opal Wilson 36, Darwin Freel 34. Seventh grade leaders Allen Kiburz 44 Crystal Howes 40 Effie Simmons 38 Doyle Robinson Junior Howes 30.
At the recent Board of Education meeting the panel approved offering free textbooks across every grade level. The decision aims to ease costs for families and support student learning nationwide.
Supt. C P Thompson will work for A B College in Des Moines this summer. Kenneth Mitchem attends State University. Mrs Kiburz will be at home in Tingley. Miss Bush will stay near Lenox. Mrs C R Bischoff remains at Conway home. Catherine Moore at home near Gravity. Perfect attendance achieved by Dorothy and Arlene Robinson Thelma Paisley Max Hunter Kathryn Hunter Shirley McKay Verneal Besco. Herman Hagn and Johnny Lee Huddle, third and fourth grades, were not tardy or absent this year.
Conway residents and guests frequent area towns with visits to Gravity Clarinda St. Joseph Lenox Bedford Guernsey and Des Moines. Notables include Miss Daisy Walker Mr and Mrs W W Palmer, the Shavers, Nortons, Miller family and others visiting relatives attending commencements and family dinners.
Pate Norton left Monday for Grinnell to secure work. Numerous visitors and travelers stop by Conway and surrounding areas including Mrs. W. H. Greenwood and grandson Elmer Greenwood of Tabor, Miss Virginia Myers from Percival, and Audrey Grubb concluding a teaching year in Rose Hill.
The Eagle school closed on Friday with a community picnic at Bibbins Park in Bedford. Local residents share updates on family visits, gatherings, and employment plans, including Olin Thummel heading to New Hampton for barber work and relatives visiting from Des Moines and Hopkins.
Several local schools reported very successful years with programs and picnics last week. Community members attended funerals, visits and family gatherings across Bedford, Shenandoah, Clearport and nearby towns as residents wrapped up the season.
High school closes in Bedford this week. Robert Terbell of Siam is a member of the graduating class. Wm. Miller Jr and Doris Woldruff finish the sophomore year and James Edward Woldruff and Bobby Rayborn the freshman year.
The usual Sunday school at both churches begins at 10 o'clock with preaching at the Methodist church at 11.
Mrs. Minnie Rayborn mourns as her father in law and children's grandfather Charles Rayborn dies in Prescott. He passed away Sunday night, leaving family and friends grieving the loss.
Mrs. Dell Fine and Mrs. Alfred Orme entertain the Rose Bud class of the M. E. church on May 26. All members are asked to be present.
Highland Chapter 523 CES met in regular session at the Masonic hall. Plans were made for a birthday social for members with birth dates January through April and entertainment was scheduled for all those anniversaries. Members were urged to attend and visitors were welcome.

Charles Fry of Clarinda guests of Clarence Stewart. Dell Fine Loren Wolruff families join Dell Miller home. Elmer Eighmy of New Market builds a stage in the community hall. Ralph Fine family callers at Joe Shields home. Alva Palmer learns of Omaha friend’s death. Arch Clayton Naomi Clayton and M. W. Miller visit N. H. Reid. Andrew Thompson and family mentioned in ongoing notices.
Rev and Mrs Charles Arnold visited Sunday at the home of her parents Mr and Mrs Dell Fine. Siam residents attended the class of 37 New Market graduation exercises Thursday evening. Maurice Herman and two friends from Lincoln Nebraska spent Sunday with Miss Marian Rayborn and Leland Rayborn. Mr and Mrs Harold Hatfield and family of Braddyville visited Thursday evening with the N A Adams family.
Iowa lawmakers enacted a clarifying amendment to Senate File 15 relating to notices in foreclosure actions. The act inserts the phrase for continuance in section eight to specify original notices’ content and becomes effective upon publication in The Taylor County Herald and The Bedford Times Press. The bill originates in the Senate and carries signatures from President Valentine and Speaker Foster with Governor Krischel approving.
Gravity W. Clark, well known Shenandoah contractor, fell from an attic to the basement while at work on a house. He was killed instantly. He was brother to J. E. Clark of Gravity. Mrs. Clark accompanied him. Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon.
Mrs. C. J. Nelson observed her eighty ninth anniversary on Friday May fourteen. Friends sent cards and gifts and a dinner was held Sunday in her honor with her Sunday school class minister physician and families present. Edith Mary Ledgerwood and Virginia Ledgerwood decorated and served. Leon Ledgerwood baked a cake trimmed with eighty nine roses and the words Happy Birthday.
Byron Clark son of J E Clark enlisted in the U S Navy while in Creston on Tuesday. Mr Clark received word Saturday that he was in Denver Colp en route to San Diego.
Reed Merrick of Humeston visited Monday at his uncle Dr. L T Reed’s home. Earl Coy and family moved last week to J G Savage residence on near main street vacated by Glade Grubb. Mrs Wm Reed, a scarlet fever patient in Clarinda hospital, visited briefly Tuesday with her quarantined family. Reed returned with her to the hospital Tuesday evening.
A special meeting of O.ES. was held Saturday evening in the chapter rooms taking in four new members. A bridge party was held Saturday evening at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Glen Huker. Carl Peller and Lloyd Martin of Norwalk Iowa visited Wednesday night at the Clifford Heller home. Mrs. Ann Onaford visited over Friday night in New Market with relatives and friends. Mrs. Olive Johnson of Clermont Missouri visited the first of the week with relatives here.
