Jane Reynolds a BUS senior works in the industrial arts shop on a gum wood double tiered corner table started in the second semester and to be finished soon. Principal remarks praise her high quality work and self guidance with only minor help from Mr. Lyal Shirk. Bedford’s annual parents night May 4 showcased student projects across grades and high school.
With only twenty four hours notice Martha Marshall BHIS senior replaced Norma Fine in the senior class play That’s My Roommate Presented Tuesday afternoon April 26 and Wednesday evening April 27 Norma took the mumps Sunday two days before the show Martha played Mrs Morgan house mother for the dormitory
Lyndell Streebin a Bedford high senior in vocational agriculture earned the Iowa Farm Degree from a state FRA committee. He was among 169 winners at the State FRA Convention in Council Bluffs on April 22, selected from 267 candidates nominated by 135 high schools.
Nomination and election of officers for the 1955 56 Hi Y were held at the April 27 meeting. The 1955 56 officers are Dale Beaver president Marvin Stephens Edldie Ingram vice presidents Bob Waldruff treasurer and Dale King secretary.
Twelve new reference dictionaries arrive at BHS per librarian Ruth Putnam. One Webster's unabridged and eleven abridged Wisconsin or Wiebater dictionaries were bought from the Iowa State Library Association for 5 dollars 40 cents each in 1955.
A United States army recruiter spoke to 29 BHS senior boys at 9 00 A M on May 3 at the local school. He emphasized completing high school before joining any service and outlined enlistment opportunities, career paths, retirement plans, and enrollment rules.
Supt. R F Van Dyke reports Bedford high and grades have acquired a new slide projector named School Master 600 from the Society of Visual Education. The district already owns three other slide projectors and two movie projectors.
Pat Perkins a BHS junior was elected president of the local Y Teen chapter at the April 27 meeting. Dorothy Dukes Janet Akers and Norma Bristow were chosen as vice president secretary and treasurer respectively. Installations set for May 11. A nominating committee prepared two candidate lists. Members discussed plans for the annual senior Y Teen breakfast.
The BHS homemaking department received four new electric stoves as part of an annual contract with BHIS. Mrs. Vessey Spry, home economics instructor, says the school covers only shipping charges. Installers include two Westinghouse stores from Iowa Power and Light Co. and two General Electric units from Prugh's Hardware.
Legislation to validate Blockton’s March 14 election with 32000 bonds awaits governor signature. Eldon King of the board of education says the bond issue will be offered immediately after signing. Funds aim to expand school facilities including gymnasium auditorium and vocational workshops.
The Just-AdMere club met Thursday with Mrs. Clara Dickinson and Mrs. Clem Bash ore hosting and receiving gifts. The next meeting will be with Mrs. Ernest Gray. Plumb Lodge held a Taylor County Study Group meeting at the Masonic Temple with about 50 present. Highland Chapter OBIS met at the Masonic Temple with social time and refreshments by Mrs. Glenn Stewart and Mrs. Alva Clayton. LeRoy Moffett was elected District chairman of Program Area of Christian Citizenship at the MYF District meeting last Sunday in Lenox. Richard Fine holds the same sub-district office. Family Night gathered Thursday evening for the event.
Thirty nine seniors from BHS toured Kansas City on their annual walkout day April 29. They left at 6:00 a.m. by chartered bus and arrived at the Municipal Airport at 8:45. Twenty four rode a Braniff DC-3 for a 20 minute air tour. Meals and visits included Forum Cafeteria Ford plant Union Station city hall Liberty Memorial and private dining at Sammie Lupin's. Evening entertainment featured a Kansas City New York baseball game stage shows and quovies. Sponsors were Mrs. T J Kirketey and Mr. Robert Duncan financed by bake sales dances a class play and a scrap drive with 15 cents weekly dues.
Hopkins community events feature church socials with group singing and games, visits from families, birthday remembrances, and a May 13 basket dinner. Obituaries note Phoebe Christine Chaney 69 of Hopkins, and May milestone events include awards for FF.A. dairy team and senior class honors LaDonna Rose Baldwin and Lois Ann Alexander.

Mr and Mrs R Turner and Maurice Pave were among attendees at the ball game in Kansas City Friday night between the Athletics and the Chicago White Sox. Mr and Mrs Joe H Wright were dinner guests of Judge and Mrs M E B Ford of Maryville with Mrs Mattie Dykes of Maryville also joining.
