Bedford School hosted its annual military ball in the high school gym Friday March 13. Band mothers sponsored the event serving punch cookies and sandwiches. Decorations featured purple and white colors and a gold flower motif on programs. The program included a skit a vocal solo and trio.
School patrons are praised for sharing their homes with snowbound Bedford Turn students after the March 5 blizzard. Supt. Gerald Co. Bryan notes households offered shelter to students and teachers. other residents who provided accommodations were unavailable at press time.
The FFA resumes its seed testing service with no charge for germination tests. Norman Annan, local vocational agriculture instructor, urges farmers using home grown seeds to have them tested before planting to ensure viability.
One hundred twenty eight American and world history students are scheduled to submit term papers Monday March 23, says Mra Kathryn Kirketeg. The assignment aims to give students time to access reference material and organize data before conclusions. The instructor notes emphasis on art shown in illustrations and cover design, with outlines, footnotes and bibliography required.
Bedford area students were dismissed Monday March 16 as local teachers attended the district teachers convention in Creston. Notables spoke including Dr Nicholas Nyaradi from Bradley University and H H Bankhage from Washington DC. Oscar E Thompson of Iowa State Teachers College gave a welcome. Arthur Carpenter presented a report from the State Dept of Public Instruction. Music featured Creston High School radio orchestra, Corning High School vocal department, and Mount Ayr band under their conductors.
Three Bedford High School teachers missed school with the flu during the week of March 26. Ruth Putnam Keith Kimmel and J S Taylor were affected, causing a rise in student absences amid March blizzard disruption on March 5 and 6.
Connie Francis named favorite female vocalist while The Platters top vocal group and Pat Boone tied with Ricky Nelson as favorite male vocalist for the one week period. High school students have spoken through the poll results.
Bedford High reports two new students this month, Jean Elien Cox from Clarinda High and Neil Edward Hinton from Albert City Truesdale High in Iowa. The district also loses two students, Mariann Hoffman to College Springs High and Larry Stephens to Albany High in Missouri.
Joseph Black played by John Whitten confronts a mob in the three act Senior Class Play Thunder on Sycamore Street. The public is urged to attend this major money making project of the senior class.
Sixteen Hi Y members attended the Berea Church of Christ Sunday morning March 8 as part of a community eye and Hi Y points race for the Southwest Iowa award. Club sponsor Kevin Barker notes planned group church attendance every other Sunday and a prior visit to Bedford Baptist on February 22.
A color film titled New England Holiday narrated by Dale Doore was shown at BHS on March 11. The program featured scenes from Boston landmarks such as Bunker Hill and Old North Church and included photographs by a noted adventurer lecturer.
A Bedford High School observation reports boys finish lunch in about four minutes while girls take around 12. The survey notes 10 students seek seconds daily, one boy occasionally requests thirds, and many drink extra milk. Nearly all return plates, bread and butter sandwiches are common, and a six sandwich meal was seen. typical serving includes baked beans and wieners, pickles, bread and cake with milk.
Coach Blaine Shupe issued his first call for track material as workouts start indoors due to weather. Ten of last season's lettermen return, including seniors Jess Everhart relays Don Cox dashes and relays Ron Reed hurdles and relays Tom Sawyer pole vault.
The coach announced plans to host inter school meets on the local cinder path and field, aiming to involve nearby schools and foster athletic competition.
Julia Stacy seventh grader won the local grade school spelling contest on March 4 dominating both oral and written sections. Runner up Nancy Sherman also advances to the county contest to be held March 21 in Bedford high school's study hall with rural schools each sending one and town schools two representatives.
Seventy five local grade pupils were taken on a ride of eight blocks aboard Bedford fire trucks as a surprise visit. The event involved two second grades and two third grades with four teachers. Students wrote stories about the experience and sent thank you letters to the Bedford Fire Department. One pupil noted this would be his sixth ride.
Mrs Kathryn Kirketey social science instructor and TAB sponsor notes over 100 local students participate in the Teenage Book Club with more than 20 books read monthly through the program.
High school students may obtain a list of pocket-size titles from Mrs. Kirketey including Dennis the Menace dictionaries and Shakespeare. Sue Hartman as TAB chair oversees subscriptions collected by class secretaries Cave Cross Glenda Kernen and Gary Hensley who record each student’s order.
Three members of the BHS FHA chapter Glenda Kernen Sandra Poe and Rebecca Timbere will represent their club at the state FHA convention March 20 21 in Des Moines They will join Miss Barbara Fox sponsor for a two day event featuring idea sessions planning and a banquet with a style show at Younkers Tea Room The group will stay at Kirkwood Hotel.
Bedford Hi-Y nominates Harold Shepherd for district Hi-Y officer ahead of the spring co ed conference at Atlantic on April 3. About 40 Bedford Hi-Y members plan to attend while Hi-Y Tri-Hi-Y and Y-Teen groups from the Southwest Iowa district gather under the theme Making Our Influence Felt.
On March 4 the Pals for Friendship 44H gathered at Ada Jean Westlake's home. Sandra Durphey presided as president with eight members one leader and three guests present. Ariene Nook elected historian replacing Sheryl Durphey. Judy Ambrose led the music and Ada Jean Westlake conducted a grooming quiz.
