Monty Pliner of Bedford High School served as one of three judges at Shenandoah pre-district speech held March 1. Contests covered radio speaking, oratory, declamation, humorous, extemporaneous speaking, and interpretive reading.
Randall Bowen, a Bedford resident, owns about 30 shares of ABC Vending Company stock. He began investing about two years ago and considers the New York Stock Exchange study moderately important in local life.
Four weeks of high school honor roll announced by principal J S Taylor. Twelve students head the list with straight A grades while sixty three earned B averages for the period ending February 3. Senior and junior and sophomore lists include named students with straight A or B average honors.
BHS seniors have been informed about scholarship opportunities from the State University Iowa State College and Iowa State Teachers College. The notices outline eligibility and application details for these state sponsored awards.
A sewer drain pipe on the second floor in the girls washroom rusted through causing water to seep through the ceiling and damage plaster in the lower floor. A local plumbing firm replaced the lead pipe and removed a section of ceiling in the tower west hallway. Damage was estimated at 125 dollars.
Mr C J Albrecht explorer sculptor and lecturer from Homewood Minos presented Honolulu and the Magic Isles to grade junior high and high school students in the BHS auditorium Tuesday March. He spent three months in the Hawaiian Islands gathering material for his program which he has shown in Hawaii and across the United States.
Mrs. O J Kirketeg BHS history teacher sprained her ankle Sunday March 6 at home while reading term papers. She stood after her foot fell asleep and twisted her ankle causing her absence from school Monday. she resumed duties Tuesday morning.
Bedford schools will be closed Monday March 21 for a district teachers convention at Creston. Programs include addresses by Robert Kas mayor, founder of the Kazmayer European Seminar, Emile Jacobsen European journalist and actress, and Leo K Bishop VP director of the National Conference of Christians and Jews.
Frank Metzger a local highway patrolman spoke at the BHS Teenage Drivers Club meeting in March. He noted 1954 fatalities among 14 to 21 year old drivers had decreased in Town. The talk covered proposed speed limits for Iowa highways and was part of a series to improve teen driver police relations.
HHS 40 page yearbook copy finalized with eight pages of activity review and a two page cartoon feature sent to Topeka publishers on March 8. Editors Phil Bartlett and Dave Thompson noted the final shipment includes the complete copy tableau for the book.
The Bedford Band Mothers carnival raised funds for new band uniforms at the BHS auditorium and gymnasium on Wednesday evening March 16, led by instructional music instructor Ralph Balster.
A community program aired at 7:00 and 9:00 pm featured an all teachers cast in a play and two Bedford bands. The Band Mothers served a chill supper from 6:00 pm as door prizes were presented.
Forty five bus drivers superintendents and school board members from King and Taylor counties attended the state transportation clinic at Bedford High School on Tuesday March 8. Topics included school bus operation motor vehicle and traffic laws driver responsibilities maintenance accident prevention and administrative practices and problems.
Supt. R F Van Dyke attended the second annual meeting of the Iowa Association of Secondary School Administrators of North Central High Schools in Iowa City on March 11 12. The program included a Friday welcome session panel discussions and a Saturday general session and luncheon.
Weather forced absence of Mr. and Mrs. Van Dye from the Area Y gathering held in Minneapolis on Saturday March 6, where attendance had been planned for the memorial union.
Three Bedford High School students achieved superior ratings at the pre district speech contest in Corning on Wednesday March 9. Suzanne DeMott won interpretive reading William Hensch took dramatic declamation and Paw Jones claimed extemporaneous speaking honors. The cast of The Decision will advance to the next round in Clarinda, while Bertha Wintermate missed Corning due to her United Nations Seminar in New York as Youth Fellowship delegate.
Ninety BHS homemaking and BHS girls presented a style show in the BHS auditorium to a near capacity crowd Tuesday evening. The event showcased the girls modeling the clothing line created for the project.
Under Mrs. Bory supervision a seven country fashion show featured spring styles from Thompson's and Daisy's Shoppe. Ninety participants included Bannara Allen, Janet Akers, Retha Barnea, Patty Deadel, Lulu Brand, Norman Bristow, and many others. models for Thompson's and Daisy's were Mae rte Downing and Done valle Davison respectively. The event, directed by Mrs. Veasey Spry, received strong audience praise.
