The community reports Aunt Cynthia Rogers's funeral in Kearney Nebraska with relatives traveling Sunday. Others returned home from northern Minnesota and Des Moines area vacations. Residents visited Audubon and Des Moines friends, attended concerts, and welcomed visitors from Los Angeles and Tennessee.
Local residents and visitors spread through Athelstan and nearby towns this week. Mrs Lloyd Rusco visited Raven rod and Mrs Glen Bentley while William Denniston traveled from C eption Junction to see his father W R Denniston. Vera Robbe from Sheridan spent a few days with her sister Robert Alberson. Mattie Mallison visited Nancy Aut in Yville. Council Bluffs came Friday to see her aunt Mrs Minerva Jen and Isaac Carlos. Lizzie Bryan and children from Stoops Blockton were business visitors. Genese Scott took a trip to Belford on Saturday. Mrs Jess Morris of Bedford, Cleo Hager and family visited Frank Smith. Mr and Mrs C M King and Myron King visited Lorien Boyd in Sheridan Sunday. Ralph Scott of Grant City called on Rose Scott Sunday. Henry McNeese and daughter from Bedford visited John Cordell’s family. Cordell and daughter Geraldine returned home with them. K W Roberson and children of Oelwein visited her parents Golda Dawson. F J Merriman and Frank Sickels had business in Bedford Wednesday. soma Rens from OLE arte LEDS relatives at Bedford returned home Wednesday.
She will visit Center Sunday at the home of Mr. and Mrs. R. S. Clough, reflecting a local social engagement.
Modern Literary club met Tuesday afternoon June 18 at the home of Mrs Iva Parslow due to rain. Ten members and one guest Miss Mary Swan attended a covered dish luncheon then needlework and a game of 42 followed. Mrs Vera Anderson hosted Merry Matrons Bridge club with eleven members and six guests including Avis Morey Dorotha Bailey Alice Clark Eleanor Fulton Lena Clarey and Nellie Speer. Rook club gathered June 18 at Mrs Nellie Speer s home for an afternoon of Rook and refreshments. School board members and wives hosted a 6 30 dinner Friday honoring Supt and Mrs McFarland and son Richard before they relocate to Mount Ayr where Mr McFarland will head the schools.
The Dallas Damsels met June 18 with Mrs Burton, nine members attended, Violet Crowell presiding, Theda Cade secretary, Verna Grace Hipsley elected secretary after resignation. A later June 24 meeting at Crowell's home discussed Rally Day and their program including the play Beans and Bottles.
Valley Sunshine club members elected new officers at a meeting that also plans a picnic set for July 7. Officers appointed include key roles and duties to support forthcoming events.
The Christian Sunday school wins the attendance contest over the Baptist. A basket dinner for both churches and schools is planned at the city park on Sunday, June 30, with a program by the losing school. Other notes include local visits, teachers' meetings, and community events across Clarinda and surrounding towns.
Mr and Mrs Frank Sage Mr and Mrs Jerry Miller Mr and Mrs Clyde Miller and Seymour Miller were among those who attended the funeral services of Grant Owens at Coin Tuesday.
Irvin McKay returns home from Des Moines Veterans Hospital after weeks of treatment. Farragut couples and Essex families visit relatives in various towns. Creston guests, Omaha boat races, and a Farragut group picnic with new members Eva Cade and Thelma Hargis. Ice cream, cakes, and coffee followed the club program.
On Thursday June 13 a group of men and women gathered at the Andrew Nelson home to plant corn and plow truck patches while women hoe and pick strawberries. Nelson had been bedfast for three weeks and was moved to Iowa City for treatment. Helpers included Roy and Mrs Aid, Cliff and Mrs Allison, Frank and Mrs Cade, John and Mrs Cade, Dwight and Mrs Pratt, M H Stiverson, C E Pratt, Clyde Watson, Jack Hargis, Jim Terry, Raymond Cade, Kenneth Crawford, Elsa Savage, and Glen Cade. Mrs Nelson served the strawberries to the crowd.
The note expresses gratitude to friends and neighbors for help and kindness since Mr Nelson’s illness. It lists visiting families and relatives from Bedford, Salmon Idaho, Gravity, New Market, Kellerton, Mount Ayr, Grav ite, and Forest Pershin home, with numerous households named.
The Loyal Sisters class of the Christian church and families held a picnic at the lake with about one hundred attendees. Ice cream was served by the Methodist Sunday school contest losers. Verna Grace Hipsley hosted a Tuesday slumber party for her birthday with guests Ruth Noble Ethel Crawford Florence Pullan Deloris Anderson Garland Hill and Gene.
The first rodeo meeting of the season was held at the hall Monday evening. The committee appointed to organize details sets August 27 28 and 29 as this year’s entertainment dates.
Mr and Mrs John McNutt entertained about 30 relatives at their home in a warm gathering. Guests enjoyed light refreshments and shared family news in a pleasant social visit.
