Recent Rains Highlight Soil Conservation Measures

After heavy rainfall, grassed waterways reduce runoff and prevent erosion. Farmers lacking waterways sowed corn in low spots causing washouts, while hard ground practices fared better than loose ground furrows. Soils rich in organic matter resisted loss, and buffer strips trapped silt. Technical help from the Soil Conservation Service aids Taylor County farmers as terracing contour farming and buffers spread among 150 growers.
