Iowa State College agronomists say fertilizer yields can help cover erosion-control terraces. One mile of terrace covers about 10 acres, requiring roughly 628 feet per acre, with average terrace costs around 34 cents per foot or $18 per acre. A 12 to 15 bushel corn yield could pay the bill.
In Iowa the increase from starter fertilizer averages about 8 bushels per acre. In the Monona Ida soil area terracing is needed and corn yields have risen over 60 bushels per acre when adequate nitrogen and phosphate are applied.
W D Shrader agronomist at Iowa State College reports that storing rain in the soil, keeping fertility high, and weed control maximize crop water use. He notes irrigation may help, subsoil moisture sustains midsummer crops, and fertility enhances water efficiency in corn and meadow. Contouring terracing and good cover boost infiltration.
Governor Hoegh proclaims June 12 to 19 as Soil and Water Conservation Week in Iowa. The notice lauds district commissioners, technicians, and farmers for their roles and urges continued public support and conservation ethics to protect land, water, and forests for future generations.

Local committees screen requests to fund two or three core practices, with 85 percent of the 1955 allotment used in the first quarter. Farmers may file anytime during the program year while funds remain.
