Farm Outlook Signals Lower Hog Prices and Higher Feed Costs

Farm Economist Francis Kutish of Iowa State University projects a 7 percent rise in this spring and 3 percent in fall for the national pig crop. Hog prices are expected to ease but not disastrously, with fall prices $2 to $3 below last year and winter prices $1 to $1.50 lower. Feed costs rise as corn nears $1.10 per bushel, though bean meal may lift slightly at harvest. The USDA signs indicate reduced feed grain stocks next year, and resealing 1960 corn for 1961 eligibility could yield cheaper feed options for Iowa feeders.
