BCHS principal J. Frank Nugent emphasizes report cards as a tool to inform parents of student performance and assess progress toward future training. Semesters average two nine week grades and a final exam. grades A through D pass, F marks failure, with conditional grades used in borderline cases for possible improvement.
Superintendent Gerald C. Bryan comments on last Tuesday's BCHS fire drill. He notes the exit from the school was performed more quickly, with overall time slightly above average, and says there is room for further improvement.
BCHS plans a Friday Feb 3 after game social replacing the usual dance. The event, organized by the student council, will occur at the school with gym activities and contests plus dancing in the lunchroom. A council spokesman says dancing instruction will be provided.
BCHS students watched by television the inaugural events in Washington for President John F. Kennedy. Supt. Gerald C. Bryan led students to the auditorium to view history in the making. Classes were dismissed early to see the swearing in and Frosts poem dedication.
BCHS hot lunch program lists the daily menu beginning January 23. Monday features dried beef gravy over mashed potatoes and other items. Tuesday offers Spanish Rice with cheese, vegetables and sandwiches. Wednesday presents vegetable beef stew with crackers. Thursday serves macaroni and cheese with sides. Friday includes salmon patties and potato salad with fruit.
BCHS adds several contestants to last week’s Mt Ayr speech event. Humorous Defamation by Robin Young and a program entry list includes Brotherly Love, Beauty Is Only Skin Deep by Marceline Loghry, Why Don’t You Tell Me Theee Things by Rita Lemke, and Interpretive Poetry by Ron Tribolet, Carl Sandburg’s Chicago, From the Cycle of the West and Death of Crazy Horse by Alan Davidson, Ken Thompson with From the Cycle of the West and Death of Crazy Horse.
The Pals for Friendship 4 H club met January 19 1961. Frances Miller spoke on improving room harmony in decor. Arlene Nook demonstrated how rhythm enters into picture hanging. Delegates Arlene Nook and Sandra Curphey were chosen for winter camp. Reporter Cathy Miller.
The science rooms are filled with insects as biology students study using live specimens including earthworms star fish clams crayfish and frogs. A new group of typing pupils arrives as student council and Y Teen girls push forward Operation Foreign Exchange Student with optimism.
Colorful displays greet students entering Mrs Ruth Putnam's BCHS Spanish classroom. Posters dolls and objects mark the nine week Spanish exhibit created by students Maurice O'Connor Dick Steward Laura Smalley Betsy Thompson Pat Sickels and Margie Thummel.
The BCHS student council seeks to form a local American Field Service chapter to host an exchange student for about 10 months. An organizational meeting is set at the school on February 2 at 2 30 pm, inviting any group or individual to participate and elect the council.
Farm Economist Francis Kutish of Iowa State University says hogs will convert corn to pork profitably in 1961. Slaughter this month may be below 1960, with a smaller February decline. Summer slaughter could be higher than 1960, but July to September may not match 1959. Prices may dip this winter then rise to about 18 dollars per hundredweight by late spring. The August 1960 break is unlikely to repeat. 1961 spring prospects suggest fall hog prices near 1960 levels.
Phillip P. Gillam of Denver urges teens to quit complaining and take action. He advises going home to duties, helping others, learning, working, and becoming responsible to avoid societal ills. The Creston News Advertiser reprints his plain spoken letter.
The Nan Van Dyke chapter of Future Teachers of America sponsors a bake sale at the Taylor County Extension office on Saturday January 28 from 8 a.m. to noon. BCHS students are arranging the event to benefit a cause.
Twenty two BCHS students will receive silver pins for 40 to 49 words per minute in the 10 minute typing test. Bronze pins go to those scoring 30 to 39 WPM, including Allen Gold and many others. Tests, issued by the American Institute of Business, Des Moines, cover accuracy with a 10 word penalty per error and a 10 error limit.
The Platte Peppy Pals 4H club met January 7, 1961 at Theresa Ryan's home with Judy Hender presiding. Connie Davenport named winter camp delegate, Farene Shawler chosen as club photographer, and three new members Farene Shawler Stephanie Walters and Linda Crowell joined. Talks covered rhythm in picture hanging harmony in room decoration and arranging a room with color scheme. Reporter Linda Reed.
