Bedford high school distributed semester report cards to students yesterday January 22. Principal Kenneth E. Miller notes the cards include grades for the first three six weeks, semester test grade, semester average, and attendance. Cards are not to be returned.
Twenty four BHS students completed a semester drivers training course taught by Keith Kimmel. The program included 34 hours of classroom instruction and six hours of behind the wheel training to satisfy National Education Association requirements. Seven local FFA students will receive gilt hogs as a future money making project. Norman L. Annan, BHS vocational agriculture instructor, says the fourth annual supervised farming project will provide purebred registered gifts for boys in the Future Farmer organization. The hog recipients must return two 200 pound gifts from the first litter. All hogs are double vaccinated to ensure disease free stock.
Tests given to Bedford's grades three through eight earlier this year are expected back in five to six weeks. Special education instructor Joe Sickels notes the scores are used to measure yearly scholastic progress and are sent home as percentages to compare with national norms.
Bedford schools reverse bus routes for second semester affecting rural students who were picked up first and now will be picked up last. Six buses cover 604 miles daily and 41,296 miles yearly, using 11,335 gallons of gasoline at an average near seven miles per gallon.
Movies of the State Marching Band Contest held in Bedford October 15 were shown to band mothers on Wednesday afternoon January 15. The films, taken by Blaine Shupe, were presented during the band mothers’ monthly meeting. W R Hallenbeck is the instrumental music instructor and band director.
The report lists financés and performances by the Glenwood Clarinda and Bedford bands along with formations by the Shenandoah band, outlining programming across the region.
History classes at BHS assign term papers due March 10 under teacher Kathryn Kirketey. Outlines and sources must be approved before final drafts. Students struggle with overlong submissions, with a target length around 25 pages.
The Taylor County Board of Supervisors met in an adjourned session with members O E Bricker chairman Loyd B Larsson and County Auditor H G Tribolet present. Minutes approved and bills allowed including court reporter attorney fees per diem milage for several officials and vendors such as Matheny Arthur G Jane Jensen Elton Loyd B Larsson Nora B Morris Jerry Matheny and others.
A compiled Sheridan column lists refunds for several individuals and companies including Akers Bil Howard and Shannon Gerald, plus pharmacy store opening at Sheridan drug. It also covers secondary road payrolls, local social events, visits, and anniversary celebrations for J H Dye and Wallace Kennedy with family gatherings and church ties.
