Rural schools contest rescheduled for February in Taylor county
The Times-Press annual play contest for rural Taylor County schools will be held February 24 after a postponement due to illness. Elimination rounds are February 16 and 17 with final rounds at locations chosen by sponsors. Mrs. Anna Churchill will supervise. eligible entrants must be rural schools, one act plays only, under ten minutes, with enrolled students making passing grades.

James Lewis Dies At Son's Home In Bedford
James Lewis 84 died at his son Harry Lewis’s home in Bedford on Thursday January 11. Funeral services were held Saturday at Wetmore Funeral Home, with Rev. Clark M. Crowell officiating. Burial followed in Fairview cemetery. Born April 17, 1849 in Wayne county Kentucky, he married Nancy Jang Wong in 1865. They moved to Jasper county Iowa in 1873 and lived in Iowa most of their lives, apart from about eighteen years. Surviving are his wife and three children Will Lewis Des Moines Myrtle Lee Nails South Dakota and Harry Lewis Bedford, plus twenty grandchildren and several great grandchildren. seven of his children preceded him in death. He was a member of the Baptist church.

Tractor accident injures Conway man seriously
Harley Wintermute of Conway was badly hurt when he attempted to change a running tractor governor at a saw mill. A fly wheel spoke fractured his chin jaw and teeth, with deep facial wounds. He was moved to Bedford for first aid then to St. Joseph Methodist Hospital. A six inch steel fragment remained missing.

No More CWA Projects in State Reported
Welfare director Rev. C M Crowell of Taylor county says no new Civil Works Administration projects will be accepted in the state. The last two Taylor county projects funded repairs and redecorating at Lenox school. Work will continue only through February 15 or until current projects finish. Unemployed teachers and sewing relief work fall under Civil Works Service, not the recent CWA order.

Bedford Man Injured After Collision With Gas Wagon
M P Cirksena of Bedford suffered a scalp wound Friday when his car hit a gas wagon hauled by Page County tractor on the highway west of Clarinda. The entire forepart of the scalp was torn back, requiring twelve or more stitches to close the wound. The car was demolished while the tractor driver escaped unharmed.

Navy Deserter Identified After County Arrest
Paul Moore, who worked on farms in the county since last May, was arrested on a liquor charge and jailed. Fingerprints sent to Washington identified him as Paul Whitter, a Navy deserter who served four years and deserted from USS Cincinnati on the West Coast last April. Lacy ordered him sent to St Louis. L. Guy Hicks, Bedford rural carrier, was taken to a St Joseph specialist for treatment after weeks of illness. he returned home and is improving.
