A roundup of local events includes surprise visits and parties as Conway residents host family and neighbors moving to new farms near Bedford and Conway. The notes mention refresh ments, a play rehearsal at Hobgoblin House, and several social calls, with trips to Creston Hop kins and Clarinda as well as local bridge and dining gatherings.
Surprise party held Friday evening by Pinochle club members at the home of F A Stafford to celebrate his birthday. Oysters and trimmings served as guests enjoyed an evening of Pinochle with Mr and Mrs H H Dorsey and son Merle of Red Oak and other Conway friends in attendance.
Conway boys lost the final to Blockton in the Bedford county tournament while the Conway girls beat Blockton to win first place. Supt Rex Dory refereed efficiently as many Conway residents attended. A spelling contest for grades 4 to 8 is set for March 6 in the high school auditorium with preliminary room contests already held.
CLEARFIELD delegates led by Frances Pemberton Helen Cochran and others traveled to Lenox for the Older Boys and Girls Conference on Wednesday February 20 accompanied by Rev. John C. Turner and Miss Mildred Sage. Local club Loyal Workers met at the Christian church with refreshments provided by a committee.
Winners from seventh and eighth grades include Kathryn Hunter Betty Beemer Joyce Beemer Jeanette Norton Ralph McMullen Robert Rodebraugh Robert Winner Hamler Hewitt Bertha Woodruff Genevieve Stafford Alice Hawn Catherine Marshall Helen Straight and Margaret Brown. Farmers use corn-hog checks for tax payments and other debts while a silo on Carl Rollston's Adel farm showcases drought-damaged corn utilization. Loren E Dodd Colfax buys farm essentials with corn-hog funds as Roy Baird Webster City paints his home with aid from the same payments. County Agent Donald Fish and Adel residents Roger and Kenneth Roge r discuss the program as Royer barn receives a paint job.
Last week several students achieved perfect sales results including Doris Lincoln Bryce Beemer Charles Brown Viola Brown George Donaldson Harold Connor Joyce Clark and Keith Waudby Genevieve Wintermute Marceline Redburn Arlene Hunter Johnnie Lee Huddle Kyle Hayworth and Robert Bischoff. Jackie Rosebrough leaves fourth grade due to move near Clearfield. Third grade won a spelling contest with five weeks of competition. perfect spell ers Friday included Dean Beemer Dean Baxter Clifford Brown Rebecca Hayworth Dean Hunter Charles Marshall Doyle Moore Robert Norton Donald Palsley and Jackie Rosebraugh.
The list records pupils with one hundred percent spelling last week: Opal Lincoln Arlene Pullen Ona Hogue Ruth Lincoln Emma McMullen Doyle Robinson Effie Ellen Simmons and Kathleen Wintermute. Lorenee Simmons was absent Wednesday due to illness. Honor students for the six week period are Opal Lincoln Gayland McCurdy Ruth Lincoln John Allen Kiburz and Emma McMullen. Two fifth grade students Effie Ellen Simmons and Ruth Lincoln scored one hundred percent in arithmetic. Sixth grade honor roll includes Opal Lincoln and fifth graders Gayland McCurdy Ruth Lincoln John Allen Kiburz and Emma McMullen.
Conway and Sharpsburg Methodists announce a joint roll call for next Sunday with worship at the Sharpsburg church location. Members are urged to attend and participate in the service.
Des Moines guests include Mr. and Mrs Myron Laipple and Paula Jeanne. St Joseph hosts include Mr. and Mrs Charles Gray and Louise. Maitland guest of H A Dalby last week. In the morning and Conway in the evening, bring your cards for the offering basket. The high school orchestra will perform with speaking parts. Mr. Richey will sing a requested solo. The theme is God's Call to the Church. Sunday schools seek large crowds. Young people attended the Older Boys and Girls conference at Lenox. A benefit play by the young people will be held Saturday night in the high school auditorium.
Gravity residents and visitors are listed in a social roundup. Mr. and Mrs. Van Alstine moved from a farm near Guss to Gravity as Mr. Van Alstine recovers from paralysis. Numerous neighbors and relatives from Indianola Indianola Clarinda Bedford Des Moines Glenwood Shenandoah and Creston appear in visits transfers and caretaking duties over the week.
Mr and Mrs Charles Gray hosted the bridge club last Wednesday. Mrs Wren Pere led Chapter 4k of P E O Friday. The D S C held a Colonial costume party at the Masonic Temple Tuesday and observed guest day. Mrs Will Jeffers hosted the Loyal Womans class of the Christian church Wednesday. About one hundred ladies attended the Washington tea by the Woman s Foreign Missionary society at Hotel Jones Friday. The Baptist church held an open meeting Thursday evening. Mrs Sam King hosted the Ladies Aid society of the Methodist church Wednesday afternoon. The Ladies Council of the Christian church will meet at Mrs Frank Andrews home Wednesday afternoon with Mrs G McMaster, Mrs Howard Lockhart and Mrs J J Andrews assisting hostesses.
Hopkins High School held a Friday morning assembly in the auditorium to honor Washington's birthday. Six weeks tests occurred last week and grade cards are to be issued this week. The basketball team suffered a defeat at Skidmore on Wednesday night.
Ravenwood played its final game of the season at home this week. The school has recently bought three new typewriters for use in classrooms and offices.
Mr. and Mrs. Merrill Vawter were hosted by about sixty neighbors in Eagle Grove with Progressive dominoes and refreshments as they prepare to move to a farm northwest of Bedford. A long list of local residents attended the informal gathering marking the departure.
Sadness fills the Ira Music home southeast of Maple Grove as pneumonia claims three family members in the past week. Daughters Mrs Joe Downing and Mrs Al Bowen die within days of Ira Music. Bowen leaves behind an infant, a husband, and a six year old daughter. Meanwhile neighbors and relatives move, host, and travel as roads drift and community life continues with visits, schooling absences, and routines in nearby towns.
