BCHS journalism class studies nationwide papers to learn readership and newswriting. The new weekly The National Observer editions one and two, distributed by Dow Jones, arrive for class use.
The Iowa Future Teachers of America annual convention adopts Teaching for One World as its theme. Delegates will be installed at the Des Moines event on Saturday February 24 with Jean Dunkin Peggy Neil Mary Poore Lela Rutledge and Jesus Zamarbide named in the ceremony.
BCHS sophomore Hugh King delivered a special report on the stock market to the economics class last week. He used stock certificates to illustrate buying, the New York Stock Exchange, and stock valuation and projection methods.
The BCHS concert band will attend Iowa State University’s evening band concert in Clarinda on February 27. The 90 piece ISU band will perform at the Clarinda Community College and High School auditorium. BCHS buses will transport students to the event.
BCHS instructor Eugene Hannon added a new exercise to the girls physical education program calling it the Twist the latest dance sensation. Classes began Twist exercises last Wednesday with Hannon stating it is one of the best six exercises for the students.
The Bedford High School BCHS choir under Alan C Byers performed two musical selections for the Taylor County Education Association meeting at a local Christian church last Wednesday. The mixed double quartet featured Kathy Hixson Alice Wintermute Sharon Turner Betsy Thompson Rita Lemke Phyllis Schneider Ellen Dunn Allan Davidson Bob Dalton Mickey Ware Robin Young Allan Miller and Dick Hatfield. Steve Shupe stood in for Dick Janson who was absent.
Karen Deal the 1961 62 Bedford FFA Chapter Sweetheart received a white corduroy jacket at a ceremony during halftime of the Mount Ayr Bedford basketball game. She was selected as the outstanding girl from the junior and senior classes by FFA members. John Walston presented the award with escorts Roger Brummett and Paul Ackley.
BCHS students in American literature and journalism classes viewed the film Dont Be A Sucker. Brown urged pride in heritage and leaders like Washington and Lincoln and called for unity in America today.
BCHS students of the FFP A are training for the district competition at Harlan on March 10 with rounds in public speaking parliamentary procedure creed extemporaneous speaking and the chapter program of work. Advisor Norman Annan works with each member for local contest preparation.
The Bedford elementary school releases the third Junior Gazette edition edited by sixth graders led by co editors Steve DeMott and Mike Metzger. The issue features poems sports editorials and school news with contributions from many students and reports on local activities and gatherings.
Two BCHS students David Stephens and Alan Jones visited the Baptist college in Sioux Falls South Dakota as guests of the church sponsored institution. They toured the campus attended classes and took part in personal interviews led by Rev. Calvin Caughey.
Mrs. Bessie Godfrey reports W T Club members brought ice cream and cake to honor Mr. and Mrs. T. A. Harris on their Golden Wedding anniversary and presented a lamp. A dinner for relatives and friends is planned. The T S Club held its annual basket dinner and meeting at Bill McDonald home with 14 couples attending. New members Alfred Soffebrottin and Bertha Eden joined. Mystery Pal gifts went to Mrs. Floyd J. Lowry and Mrs. Bill McDonald. Contests were led by Mrs. Paul Depew. winners were Mrs. Jess Brown and Mrs. Dale Peterman. Builders class to meet Feb 23 with hostesses and devotions by Mrs. Verna Burton. Relatives learned of the death of Mrs. Lee Benson formerly Anna Gillett of St. Joseph Mo. Funeral service details follow.
Shambaugh Cub Scouts and parents plan a frosts at a Blue and Quarrauet for the New Market Lions and M.Y.E. will present "Traveling Cross" February 16 at Lenox. Lenox to lead the worship service and entertainment. local group to host the event. Memory Happy Hour club hosted by Mrs. Har old Boster February 15 with eight attendees. Grace Glasgow and Carl Hughes receive door prizes and a birthday gift respectively. Church of Christ services outline Bible school at 10, worship at 11, radio program at 6, youth hour 6:45, singspiration 7:30. midweek prayer at 7:30.
Miss Ruth Krause a 1960 BCHS graduate and St Joseph Beauty School alumna chairs Chillicothe Mo observance of National Beauty Salon Week February 11 to 17. She is the daughter of Mr and Mrs Stanley Krause of Bedford.
Mrs Irene Cerny of Lone Tree Iowa visits her mother Mrs Flora Ginn in Conway. Weekend guests include Mr and Mrs Robert Norton Jackie Paul and Peggy Rusco at Eldon Goulds in Des Moines. Wendell Eighmy with his parents at New Market. Rex Hawn and daughter of Bedford also mentioned.
Tuesday evening visitors included Mr and Mrs O D Neming Mra Duane Hill and family from Murray. Saturday guests were Mr and Mrs Lewis Cox and Joyce at the Robert Norton home. Mrs Mary S Hamilton and Mike of Palmer Alaska arrived to visit relatives. Mr and Mrs Miller and in-laws attended the Sim Beemer home with Mr and Mrs Marvin Boyer of Clearfield also in attendance.
