Conway Miss Thelma Zimmerman and Miss Stella Saylor celebrate birthdays at Mrs. Lucy Saylor home. Lent lead to Easter on March 28. Various classes meet midweek. Crestom pastors meet in Clarinda. February 21 services listed. Valentine art and Lincoln study noted.
Conway boys captured the conference crown by beating New Market 49 to 44 on Saturday. The Conway second girls team advances to Lenox for a midweek game against their seconds. The state declamatory contest will be held in Conway on Monday February 22 with several contestants from Clearfield Gravity Sharpsburg and Conway competing.
Local residents from Bedford Conway Lenox Grinnell and nearby areas are mentioned in a series of weekend and weekday visits. Names include Mrs. J Kernen Mrs. W A Bates Supt. C P Thompson Miss Geraldine Myers Edwina Rhodes Ruth Shafer and Dan Matheny family. Several trips span Bedford Conway Lenox and Platteville with relatives in Kent Clearfield Hopkins Tingley Creston Omaha and northern Arkansas.
The Athelstan Sunny Corner club met February 10 at Mr. and Mrs. Robert Bell's home. Ladies spent the day quilting and a covered dish luncheon followed at noon. Present were Mr. and Mrs. Raymond West and their daughter.
Mr. and Mrs. Fred Jacobs and daughter appear with Mr. and Mrs. Char lie Welch Smith West and Mrs. Nora West among a group of Mrs. Pearl Childers, Mr. and Mrs. George Clark, Mrs. Ethel Hammers, Mrs. Ella Jones, Mr. and Mrs. Zollman, Mrs. Alla Ridge, Mrs. Cupid, Mr. and Mrs. Kidney in the society column.
J C Childers attended dinner at the Charley Surphiss home on Wednesday and celebrated his seventy second birthday anniversary.
The Stitch and Chatter club met with Katie Kemery on Thursday February 11. Eight members and one visitor attended. They sewed carpet rags and planned a February 25 session with Etta Cavin. Reports noted stock injuries from ice, including Frank White and Noble Campbell, and F A Freeland lost a horse after it broke through an abandoned cellar and had to be killed.
A blot of social visits shows Mrs W G Black and her son Ermil and kin in Sherman with Mrs Verne Byrnes and family and Mrs M A Jenkins and husband. Visitors include C A Alexander of South Dakota to S Alexander’s, Roy Mercer and two Tamariuses from Platteville to Athelstan. Ed Parker becomes manager of Cudahy Produce at Athelstan and other locals host kin and business guests from Blockton, Maryville, Isadora, and St Joseph.
Mrs May Brand chosen as operator again this year by tele phone exchange managers. Rainbow Circle of the United Presbyterian church met with Melba Steward on February 10 and nine members attended. Lavon McMath led the program with refreshments. H C club met February 3 with Mrs Clyde Rupert hosting a noon covered dish dinner for eight members and two guests Myrtle Young and Margaret Nickle. The day was spent in activities.
The Kensington circle entertained the Fortnightly club at the R. R. Bailey home on Thursday afternoon February 11. Mrs. Ray Lyddon led a program on Iowa with help from several members. Refreshments followed. Separately, Mrs. W. C. Henn and Mrs. L. F. Mahoney hosted the primary room pupils in honor of their daughters Marian Mahoney and Marilyn Henn whose birthdays fell last Sunday and Thursday.
Clearfield locals share visits and gatherings as families from Sharpsburg Mount Ayr and Council Bluffs appear in weekly rounds. Mrs. Mary Wolford shows improvement after illness while a number of relatives travel and host in the Anderson and Mann households.
Miss Frances Clark and Jimmie Welch wed in Des Moines on Sunday February 7. Both have held Des Moines positions and plan to reside there. Mrs. Will Richardson formerly Miss Lela Rae of this area passed away in Akron Colorado. Bob Roberts ex Ladoga store manager and Nodaway resident died February 8. Funeral held in Nodaway.
Mr and Mrs W E Fonken of Hot Springs S Dak left Friday evening after visiting Rev and Mrs Bissinger. Dr Dermody the veterinarian recovering after appendicitis surgery in Des Moines. Mr and Mrs L A Mahaffey left Fleming Colo after visiting for her mother’s illness. Mrs E V Creech is ill at her Grayty home. Mrs Kata Alvord is ill. Mrs Emma Farnham improving after weeks of illness. Mrs Robert Marshall assisting. Mrs Merle Allen in Cres ton hospital for treatment. Mrs Gussie Williamson visiting son Jake Williamson then returned to Shenandoah. Miss Elsie Goudie of Des Moines...
Mrs Wesley Walters hosted J D C lunch engagement Thursday. A home project meeting focused on recaning and refinishing furniture at Mrs Will Rock home Tuesday. Miss Mary King and Frog Pond pupils enjoyed a Valentine party with fruit salad and cake. Mrs Gilbert Branan and sons attended a Valentine party at Beachdale school Grove township with pupils and mothers, treats included fruit salad and cookies. Birthday club and families held a farewell party for Curt and Mrs Mc Coy moving east of Gravity. seven families attended with oysters served. Mrs Harve Hoffman hosted Helping Hand club on Tuesday afternoon planning a comfort tie at her home.
George Walters delivered a message for the Johnsons whose home burned. Refreshments followed. Local youths held a Saturday party at Glenn Mae French’s residence. The Ladies Aid met Wednesday for a quilting session at Mrs. Paul Firkins’s home. A covered dish dinner concluded the day.
Mrs. John Spring attended the funeral for her uncle Bob Roberts in Nodaway Wednesday. Mrs. Cinda Hess visited Cy Murphy’s near Villisea and Will Rock Friday. Mrs. Cordes fell on ice Wednesday, injuring her hip and is bedridden. Dorothy Burright was ill and unable to take her eighth grade exam. The Grays of Burlington Junction stayed with daughter Vara and family last week. Leonard visited his parents Sunday, and Mr. Harve Hoffman hosted Sunday evening. Mrs. Shum and Mrs. Wilson visited Shum’s ill mother Friday night. No school at Fairview this week due to teacher Ina Kimpton’s illness.
Sheridan hosted Hopkins in a basketball contest Thursday with the home team prevailing 19 to 17. Ray Produce won Monday night defeating Farmers Produce 15 to 10, marking Farmers’ first loss of the schedule. The Water Cafe played Cook and Evans How. The Sew and So club met January 28 with Mrs. Margaret Anders for embroidery tea-towels and refreshments. seven members attended.
Friday afternoon the high school auditorium hosted missionary Rev Benjamin F. Allison from the Philippines. Local residents and families were noted visiting relatives and attending events including gatherings around the community.
