BCHS employs three women to run the lunch program for 180 days a year feeding 290 students. They plan 35 to 40 main dishes meeting type A lunch rules with ample ingredients and machinery to serve up to 9,100 loaves of bread and 9,100 gallons of milk annually.
A byline style staff roster lists editors reporters and assistants for the Bulldog Monitor student newspaper. Key roles include editor Bob Hill assistant Betsy Thompson news editor Kathy Hixson sports editor Alen Davidson and feature editor Dennin Spencer with multiple reporters named.
Hugh King, state student council president, leaves Kansas City by jet to attend a national SC gathering in Washington D C. Delegates from 50 states and 30 foreign countries may tour historical landmarks as he visits Congress, with costs shared by state and national associations.
Principal Frank Nugent announces two scholarship programs for BCHS students. The Iowa Farm Bureau offers eighteen $160 grants for farm residents to attend any Iowa college, with a April 1 deadline. The Iowa Federation of Women's Clubs offers a $250 nurses training grant and a $500 freshman scholarship, with March 1 final date for nursing applicants. districts may have one applicant each.
Gary King lectures his electronics class on verifying a square wave with an oscilloscope and signal generator. He notes the circular dependency: to calibrate the generator you must verify it on the scope, and to set the generator you must check it with the scope.
About 30 annual pages across four sections will be mailed this week to publishers by the 1963 Torch staff. The mail includes junior high, all high school class sections, and portions of sports and curriculum content. Cover and end sheets went out earlier this year, editor Jim Travis reports.
All FFA members will wear official jackets during National Future Farmers of America Week from February 17 to 23. President Paul Ackley urges members to conduct themselves with care during these days.
FHA members met at Sandy Goudie's house yesterday to craft valentines for Bedford nursing homes. The group plans to mail the cards to residents, spreading cheer.
A Valentine theme BEA party is planned for next Wednesday night at the high school. Mrs. Alice Mansfield notes Bedford and Gravity teachers and spouses will attend, with guests from Conway and Blockton. The program committee includes Gary King, Mrs. Mansfield, Elbert Daniel, Bill Armstrong, and others.
Better Homes and Garden cookbooks were ordered February 7 by Mrs. Lou Ellen Henderson, home economics instructor. Home economics students and teachers bought kitchen aids for 3.25 dollars by school order. This marks the fourth year of the program, with Betty Crocker books purchased last year.
Bet sy Thompson senior and Allen Miller junior of BCHS will discuss youth employment challenges at the Presbyterian Women's Association meeting. The session is scheduled for 2 pm next Tuesday at the church.
Junior high and second grade students present a program at the Blockton PTA meeting at 7 30 p m February 20 in the grade school building. Patrons are asked to bring pie and their own table service.
The student council held two meetings to cover a crowded agenda including a new constitution, an activities point system, lunch line issues, an after game dance, a fund raising supper, and district finances. Key features were debated with a draft to be voted on before spring officer elections.
The fifth annual FTA state convention in Des Moines features seven local members on February 23 at Tech High. Speakers include Dr. Dwain Ehrlich and Miss Ella Cosner. State officers will be elected in the morning, and sponsors meet after the business session. Rhoda Caffee highlights a slate with Lela Rutledge and five others.
About 40 seven semester transcripts are being sent to colleges by the principal’s office for 27 seniors seeking admission. The reports include all high school grades to date, class rank, test scores, and a principal’s recommendation.
Next Thursday is election day for 1963 64 PHA officers. Two hundred light reading classics and reference paperbacks arrived at the student council book store on Feb. 4, reports manager Bob Dalton. The rack offers volumes from 25 to 75 cents and will be kept full by The Husker News Company of Atlanta for SU days. if demand continues, another order may be placed.
Miss Srene Mosier executive director of the Iowa Town and Country YMCA visited Bedford last Wednesday to contact students. In the afternoon she and Mrs. Kenneth Meyers president of the Y Teen Mothers Council discussed ways to improve the council.
Bill Armstrong a high school instrumental instructor acted as judge for a Conway preliminary audition held last Tuesday. Conway band director Mrs. Ona Chaney observed the session along with Armstrong as students sought a place in this year's junior high music contest at Corning.
Supt. Gerald C. Bryan states deficiency notices are being mailed to parents this week to inform them of their child’s failing or borderline work.
Twenty-five junior high students were named to the honor roll by Prin Johnny Smith. Eight graders Dixie Beemer Nancy Bush Janet Caskey Wayne Haidsiak Jeanne Janson Michael Kinney Martha Larson Mike Volkmar Janet Nicholas Willis Sneed and Patricia Terbell plus seventh graders Larry Churchill Donna Ettleman Judy Harmon Jim Jeter Nancy Davidson Stephen DeMott Dee Ann Loutzenhiser Linda Marshall Nancy Melvin Mike Metzger Patricia Rusco and Rena Sickels earned second nine weeks recognition and the semester roster.
Thespians staged the first informal initiation of the year Tuesday night in the high school lunchroom. A supper for all was followed by an initiation for those qualified. Eligible for membership were Frances Parman Cheryl Barnes Dan Wetmore Edd Hobbs Robin Young Richard Bunn Steve Wainwright Rick McMahill Tim Beemer John Sharp Sharon Turner Alice Wintermute Joyce Keith Claire Straight Kathy Hixson Rita Lemke Betsy Thompson planned the supper with Chuck Oberwetter and Bob Hill in charge.
NWMSC students will speak at a FTA sponsored assembly at 11 a.m. February 20. Guests will urge BCHS students to consider teaching as a career via panel or group discussion.
Eleven freshman agriculture students are due to complete shop projects tomorrow as lack of facilities limits the schedule for three vocal classes. Instructor Norman Annan notes insufficient equipment forces students to build at home or have work done off site while projects include sheep bank hog trough salt box and other metal gates and feed bunk components.
Blaine Shupe states 36 students in the second semester driver's education class will move from four weeks of classroom work to hands on driving practice after completing initial theory.
Eloise Pfander Weir, a 1962 BCHS graduate, now lives in Muncie Indiana where her husband Lee Weir is a Ball State Teachers College student. She previously lived in Gravity with her parents Mr and Mrs Cloyd Pfander before graduation.
