Mrs. Elsie Dougan spoke to Taylor County students about welfare services and Federal surplus foods aiding needy families. LeRoy Anderson attended a Cancer Education Workshop in Indianola to improve high school teaching on disease, its prevention, and available ACS resources.
The public is invited to the February 16 PTA meeting at 6 o clock in the high school building to hear a representative of the Department of Public Instruction discuss reorganization. A survey of Bedford's grade and high school plants by the state department will justify recommendations for an addition to the high school and repairs to the grade building. Carolyn Cummings and Karen Johnston will present declamatory selections under Mr. King Wisdom. A film will be shown in the lunch room for the younger set while parents attend.
The Lenox high school band, a 60 piece group, will give a one hour concert at the Bedford school auditorium tomorrow at 10 30 a m open to the public. Afterward they will lunch in the cafeteria then travel to Mt Ayr high School for an afternoon concert.
Floyd Van Reenen of Bedford Iowa receives special recognition from Blair Milling and Elevator Company for promoting Blair's Certified Feeds to poultrymen. The ad highlights Blair feeding program stages from starter to laying feeds and broiler rations, urging buyers to specify Blair's poultry feeds at purchase.
From January 3 to February 1, 10 of Bedford High's 204 students were absent daily on average. The current year averages eight absences per day totaling 815. Girls account for 135 and boys 91 absences in that period, 226 total. Principal J S Taylor cites colds and flu as main causes. A six inch snow on February 1 left only 11 students absent as Taylor County schools closed.
Eight sixth graders take an advanced science course taught by Mr. Joe Sickels. They studied weather using thermometers barometers and hygrometers and drew pictures of weather phases. Now they explore bacteria under the microscope choosing their own topics.
Barbara Reed 17 a Bedford junior was accidentally left off the third six weeks honor roll reports J S Taylor the high school principal. Reed has made the honor roll each six weeks this year and is the daughter of Cecil P Reed Route 1 Bedford.
Five girls in the B H S industrial arts class under Lyal Shirk are making leather metal and wood items including metal earrings coffee and end tables shadow boxes and leather purses The instructor notes the girls often produce higher quality work than the boys and lists the students Verna Moore Vera Peach Barbara Snyder Lavonne Spry and Alvira Stock.
Miss Vesta Denton leads Ross No 1 48 girls in three years of homemaking at B H S with practical cooking sewing and crafts. Students learn to operate Singer sewing machines and use attachments to create booklets future homes projects and preserved foods while costs cover food supplies at four dollars per girl annually.
Forty seven Bedford High School students, part of the world problems class, read every Reader's Digest article for class discussion. Kathryn M. Kirketey leads the project, with students paying 1 dollar 60 cents for ten issues via school discounts.
Miss Maude Nelson of Bedford spoke to the local sixth grade class Thursday afternoon January 26 on her trip to the Holy Land. She illustrated the talk with colored slides and pictures. The class has been studying the Holy Land in social studies.
Bedford high joins 14 other schools in a 285 member mass choir at the Creston music festival held Thursday. Under director Jack Anderson of the University of Wichita the two day event featured songs like All Glory Loud and Honor and Run To My Lord. Participating schools include Aston Arispe Corning Cromwell Diagonal Greenfield Lenox Leon Mt. Ayr Orient Osceola Shannon City Winterset and Creston.
The BHSS Teen-Age Drivers Club viewed the film Wheel Sense on Tuesday January 31. It featured racing champion Torpedo Jones demonstrating safe driving tactics and dramatizing why drivers should not take chances in training class.
BHS seniors began a magazine subscription drive on February 9 with Curtis Publishing Company representative explaining the sale setup. Sponsors Mrs Louise Hallenbeck and Mrs Kathryn Kirketeg outlined plans to fund Skip Day the yearbook and class expenses.
