BCHS art and journalism students watched a Metropolitan Museum of Art film last Wednesday to boost interest in great paintings. Instructor Agnes Miller urged greater cultural education, praising the illustrations and the commentary.
The national office of vital statistics reports that accidents kill 11,410 children annually.
Nineteen BCHS students study introductory fingering in typing class under instructor Well don Sundell. The second semester course meets first period daily replacing two first semester classes of 1961 62. Seniors Dick Dalton Cliff Davis John Gibson Leroy Lynch Judy Rucker and freshman Diana Karas are enrolled. The one semester course aims for accuracy and speed for practical needs. Sundell notes 5 and 10 minute drill charts will be used later and test results show speed with error reductions.
The journal was the precursor to acres in France describing the area a farmer could plow in a day. Originating in France the journal defined farmland by daily work capacity rather than fixed area.
BCHS seniors study Abraham Lincoln through February lessons titled Lincoln the Man. Projects include researching Civil War events and life phases with walls adorned by Lincoln clippings and a Lincoln grant stanton tableau. Essays emphasize grammar and organization, with related displays in social science and literature rooms.
Rovin' Riley notes faster movers like speedsters on roads while noon lunchbreaks stay quick. Semester tests are done and students work on make-up assignments for illness absences. Plans form for a Sweetheart Dance on February 23 with Y Teens and Hi Y dating. Junior class eyes a play title to spark interest. Small music acts eye late April dates for a contest and large groups rehearse for May performances.
Principal J Frank Nugent outlines how IQ and test scores relate to college expectations and scholarships. He shows students their growth using graphs and Kuder Preference records, connecting abilities with potential careers in clerical work management sales and technical fields.
In training to arrive at school here about afternoons Younger works with Keith Kimmel in the industrial arts department and will study algebra and geometry with McGinnis. Both students practice teachers have returned to college studies toward earning degrees after completing military service.
Bedford school attendance has returned to near normal after a three week period of high illness related absences. Mrs. Helen O Grady RN notes daily absences ranged from 91 to 112 during the spike, now about 12. BCHS faced influenza while grade and junior high saw chicken pox measles and flu. She warns that students could contract multiple illnesses once returning to school. The sick spell coincides with a harsh January.
Four Bedford Hi Y club juniors filed registrations to attend the Iowa Youth in Government program at the State Capitol Des Moines starting February 10. BCHS students Dennis Spencer Robin Young Allan Davidson and Robert Hill join advisor W B Brown to attend the YMCA sponsored sessions before returning April 13 14 for the Ys Model Legislature.
The Post Office Department plans a 10 year lease with renewal options with a building project. The department said its capital investment will be limited and primarily tax paid. Regional real estate officer submission is due by March 21.
The District Court of Taylor County Iowa appointed Mae Stephenson the executrix of the will and estate of J. M. Stephenson on January 29 1962. Creditors must present claims legally authenticated to the court for allowance and all debts should be paid to the executrix Mae Stephenson. James A Lucas attorney is listed.
The second semester 1961-62 mechanical drawing class at BCHS is the largest in school history with seventeen students. Participants include Berdalee Fuller Jerry Beemer Cliff Davis John Gibson Drexel Gray Max Harris Duane Harrison Alan Jones Leroy Lynch J C Marshall Ronnie Moffet David Steele Ronnie Terry Ronnie Tribollet Roland Tronein and John Walston. The class uses drafting pads and new textbooks and is expected to complete 59 drawings under instructor Keith Kimmel.
Barbara Boyer of Gravity, daughter of Mr and Mrs Willard Boyer, was placed on the mid quarter honor roll at the CE School of Commerce in Omaha.
Endell Ley Be and friends visited Clearfield during a Jay Levitt hom e visit. Mr and Mrs Jack Brose and sons called on relatives in Clearfield Sunday at the Rottéville home. Bert Nevill celebrated a 2nd wedding anniversary with Mrs je Walter. The Pra ther family moved to Clarinda this week for employment. The Woman's Study Club met with 10 members, Ruby Dille presiding. The M Y F of the Methodist led church services here and at Conway Sunday morning.
Mrs Rose Bonar of Bedford visited Sheridan Sunday to dine with her parents Mr and Mrs Frank Miller. Hal Jenkins and sons from Columbia arrived Friday to visit grandmother Mrs Icie Jenkins and Reed. Hal’s family left Sunday for home. Holloway Dunn depot agent visited Chicago last weekend. Roy Curry Clara Bond and Galen Howes attended Grant City on Monday. Mrs Pence of Clearmont stayed with her daughter and husband Mr and Mrs H F Holland.
Blogkton Caldwell and Bert Anders attended a gathering at Roger McAlister's home Wednesday afternoon. A baby boy born January 28 at St Francis Hospital died Wednesday. graveside services were held Thursday at the Brethren cemetery southwest of Sheridan. Survivors include the infant's parents, twin brothers Richard and Robert, and grandparents Mr and Mrs John Elliott of Maryville and Mr and Mrs Clifford Johnson of Sheridan.
Daryl Hawn enlisted in the Air Force and left January 31 to begin basic training at Lackland Air Force Base. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. C. D. Hawn of Conway. Mr. and Mrs. Larry Williams and family moved last week to Long Beach California.
