Bedford FFA Chapter Profits From Gilts Program

Bedford Chapter of the Future Farmers of America reports 413 dollars in profits from selling chapter gifts over the last two school years. The program began in fall 1955 with five Tamworth gilts given to members for projects, with profits shared as 200 pound barrows or two 200 pound gilts per litter. About 14 gilts were allocated to members in 1956, with listed Vocational Age students receiving gifts and honor roll members named among seniors juniors sophomores and freshmen.

Freshman Class Party Set At BHS

BHS freshmen will host a class party tomorrow evening February 8 after a postponement due to slick roads on January 25. The event features dancing and games supervised by Mrs. Ruth Putnam and Blaine Shupe, with a party committee led by Rebecca Timberlake including Harold Shepherd Cave Cross Janice Hooper Martha Perkins Ron nie Spencer and refreshments chair Sharon Underwood Mariann Hoffman Kenny Keith Leta Belle Steele.

Third-Fourth Graders Build Maine Norway Fishing Village

Mrs. Waive Shields leads 27 pupils in a miniature fishing village made from construction paper. The class builds boats houses and scenery reflecting life in Maine and Norway fishing communities. Students work in small committees and display life in the village on the bulletin board.

Lower Voting Age Bill Backed by World Problems Class

BHS world problems class acts as lobbyists for a lower voting age bill to be reviewed by the Town legislature this session. A class poll under Mrs Kathryn Kirketey showed student support for 18 as the voting age and letters were sent to Georgia and Kentucky officials to learn their passage methods.

198 School News Stories Published In First Semester

The BHS journalism class under J. S. Taylor published 198 school news stories in the TIMES-PRESS during the first semester, totaling 744 column inches. If compiled at once, the pieces would fill four eight page issues or a 33 page newspaper, averaging 10 stories per week. Tryouts Set for BHS Concert Band Chairs

BHS concert band members will audition over the next two weeks for chair placements. Instrumental music instructor Vern R Hallenbeck says tryouts will be limited to three or four players at a time to reduce tension and improve performance. Students may also be reassigned to different parts as needed. Auditions will feature music rehearsed in band sessions.

Third Grade Presents Stick Puppet Show

A stick puppet fashion show and play were presented February 1 to visiting mothers of third graders under the direction of Mrs. Darlene Wooten. Twenty two third graders crafted costumes representing Japanese Chinese Eskimo African and American styles. Dialogue was written by Diane Varley and the play by Jimmy Turner.

Miss Patricia Coulthard assumed duties as Bedford schools fifth grade instructor at the start of the second semester. Her prior teaching includes one year at Harlan and Oakland Iowa schools and two years at Northwest Missouri State College in Maryville.

Hopkins Benefit Dance Draws Overflow Crowd

An overflow crowd attended the March of Dimes Benefit Dance at the American Legion hall on Friday night February 1. The Hopkins community club sponsored the event with Everett Orme as president. Rainbow Girls canvassed town for additional drive funds and Earl Alexander with Vern Melvin planned district canvassing. All projects reported fine cooperation and support. Linda Auten rites held January 31 at Swanson Funeral Home for Mrs. Linda Auten who died after a long illness. She was 83, born in Kentucky, and had lived here many years. Survivors include three daughters, two sons, two sisters, and other relatives. Rev. David Tapp officiated.
