A Helbros wristwatch won by the FFA through selling aerosol products was auctioned at the recent meeting. Club business included party plans night meetings and FFA Week. Discussion covered selling Farm Quarterly magazine to members.
Mrs. Louise Hallenbeck announces BHS typing and office practice classes typing to music to develop rhythm. Classes start very slowly with gradual increases until students can no longer keep pace, then speed and rhythm improve.
Mrs. Beverly Thornton presented an illustrated talk using colored slides at the January 29 FHA meeting in the BHS Auditorium. She also showed girls clothes made and worn in Germany. Miss Barbara Fox praised the display as interesting and educational.
Thirty three students are named to the first semester honor roll at BHS according to principal Kenneth E. Miller. The seniors include Janet Akers Norma Bristow Kay Clark James Dwinell Bil Fellows Harold Hatfield Virginia Haynie Larry Hoffman Myrna Henry Julia Meikle Rebecca Moore Kay Russell Lois Smalley and Lee Weir. Juniors listed are Ronald Beaver Maurice Caskey Elaine Cummings Larry Hatfield Julia Henry and Nancy Manley. Sophomores named are Shirley Downing Gale Fearnot Gregory Guenther John Hunter Kenneth Keith Harold Shepherd Rebecca Timberlake and Sharon Underwood. Freshmen are David Akers Betty Fine Glenda Kernen Marilyn Beck and Dick Steward.
Bedford High School students in two biology classes explored microscopic animals. A two headed planaria was produced by regenerating the original head. Instructor Kevin Barker notes the experiment fits a unit on microscopic life including paramecium englena ameba and sponge, with fifty seven students enrolled.
Bedford junior class held a skating party at Lenox on Tuesday February 4, per class president Ronnie Beaver. Sophomore guests rode the school bus with state class sponsors present. instructors Keith Kimmel and Mrs. Margaret Schulz attended.
Bedford high school seniors aiming for an A or B grade in speech for the second semester are preparing original speeches on the United States Constitution. The Bedford American Legion Post sponsors the oratorical contest and exemption from final exams is offered to those maintaining the required average.
Deficiency notices were submitted January 31 by BHS teachers to be mailed to parents of local high school students. Principal Kenneth E. Miller says notices target students lagging in class work and that unreturned notices imply parental disinterest in further reports.
Bedford junior high announces honor roll students led by principal John Smith. Eighth grade honorees include Pat Brown Donald Fisher Laura Smalley Mike Thompson and Margaret Thummer. Seventh grade honorees are Sara Hurenson Bob Hill Betsy Thompson Sharon Turner and Dan Wetmore.
BHS students received Iowa test scores from September 10 and 11, shown on profile charts comparing class and national peers. The Iowa Tests of Educational Development measure student growth and were prepared by educators and psychologists.
The report outlines student performance on tested subjects including social studies background natural science background correctness for expression quantitative thinking interpretation social studies interpretation natural sciences interpretation literature general vocabulary and use of information sources.
Initial plans for the school Valentine dance at BHS were made in a senior class meeting on January 30. Committees cover Decorations Publicity Refreshments Tickets and Clean-up with members named by class president Bill Fellows and others assigned to duties.
Under Kenneth E. Miller the BHS bookkeeping class begins a unit on income taxes. Sixteen seniors will learn proper methods for filing forms with treasury department supplied forms at no charge for the last five years.
Mrs Roy Kerns reports that Mr and Mrs Bob Grimm and children visited Cla rinda relatives while Mr and Mrs Lloyd Grimm and Mr and Mrs Bill Beach spent time in Des Moines. The Weller family visited Lenox and were dinner guests at Mrs Black's home. The Methodist Bible Study met at Mrs Howard Weller's. Wayne Morris and family toured Tarkio Missouri to visit Mrs Morris's parents. Doris McKay and children from Corning spent the weekend with Mr and Mrs Lester McKay. Mrs Johnny Filbert returned home.
Mrs Bessie Boydston hosted the Birthday club at her home Thursday afternoon. Guests included Mrs Pearley Poore Mrs Belle Phalen and Mrs Georgia Borden. Rook at two tables with Mrs Mary Underwood high scorer. Hostess received a gift and refreshments were served.
Funeral services were held Tuesday for Albert F Mutti longtime Hopkins business leader. He had been ill since 1956 and the service at Wray Memorial Methodist church featured pastors Magers and Hart. He leaves five sons ten grandchildren and six brothers. Burial in the Tiepkins cemetery followed. The report also notes a Troop 65 night hike with 17 scouts, and various local social updates from Hopkins activities and visits.
The January Siam community meeting met Friday at the school house with social time, games, and refreshments. The Christian church school officers and teachers held their monthly meeting Sunday at the Frank Shields home.
A Lenox birthday dinner gathered Mr and Mrs Relph Fine and extended family including George Stanley Patricia Pratt Dick Burton Jo, to honor their mother Feb A. Obituaries and visits to Clarinda New Market Bedford marked the week with church services and school contests announced by Miss Zimmerman.
The Builld er's class met at Mrs. John Leek's home with Mrs. Leslie Yearous leading devotions aided by Mesdames Golding and Glassgow. The Baptist Missionary Society met Jan 29 at the Irvin McKay home with devotion led by Mrs. Ivan Sparks and new goals for the year's work set. Duncan, 97, services were held at the Methodist church Feb 3 conducted by Rev. Lacy Thompson. Billy S. Noble's 87th birthday observed Feb 2 at Walter Noble home. Golden wedding of Mr. and Mrs. Joe Robbins celebrated Feb 2 at Eagleville. the couple is 92 and 7 years old. Youths of the Methodist church led worship on Feb 2 with Andy Blake as leader.
A large auction listing features a 1956 IHC 400 tractor with 3-valve hydraulics, a 1954 Super H Farmall, multiple tillage and planting implements, hay equipment, feeding gear, wagons, and two air compressors. Also offered are 760 bushels of oats, 1500 bales of alfalfa, 500 bales of oat straw, a half-ton pickup, and nine Angus cows with a purebred two-year-old bull. Mr. Potter and Mrs. Brown and Mrs. Wetzel attend a Mid-Winter Conference in Minneapolis.
